Hey folks. I'm just on an XP machine temporarily, and I'm wondering about what I can do with it for fun, similar to what is capable of an Ubuntu machine . . .any thoughts?

It really depends on what you consider fun with an Ubuntu machine :)
hacking around the insides of an Ubuntu box (playing with config files, building stuff from source, setting up networking via NFS, SAMBA, etc) is what I consider fun.
(sad as that is)

If Linux users played around with Windows as much as they play with Linux, then "hacking" opportunities are no less in Windows than it is for Linux.

In Windows, make the login screen wobble when you put in the wrong password.
Then do it in Linux with GDM.
I rest my case.
As amazing as it sounds, it's actually possible to install a new window manager on Windows. Blackbox has been ported, and there are several Blackbox forks for Windows too. You even get virtual desktops!

Well, that's horribly untrue . . .You can't 'break' Windows like you can Linux, so the hacking options are very limited. I know that much . . .unless you work at M$, there's no legal way of dismantling Windows. Too bad, really. Community involvment is what makes an OS so good . .

Make your computer permanently boot to safemode, without it knowing it's in safe mode - scares the hell out of your fiends when they have nothing running when they boot!
Then ; make up an c:/etc (whoops salsh is the wrong way round)
put a whole bunch of boot scripts in it, and init form a custom autoexec.bat () you should split ur autoexec.bat to load init.d 1-5 or even 6
Then maybe install a different shell eg. bash via Cygwin. -then try and run Gnome instead of explorer.
or you could just use Linux.:)
