Solaris is developed by SUN and runs on servers/processors manufactured by the same company as well as X86 systems. It's basically a Unix OS. Check out this site:

You should read the article you posted a little bit more closely. It runs on x86 just fine.

I used it few years ago for work, I do not think it is ready for home user even if they became part of the company's aim.

I used Sun machines almost 15 years ago and liked them a lot; I tried Solaris and couldn't get it to install. Oh well.

Depends on your hardware.
It's a non-starter on low-end Intel graphics chips for example.
It's not as fun as Linux either ;)

I used Solaris 10 for a little while, but gave up due to the complexness and general weakness of wifi support. But in my opinion, the user interface is one of the greatest I've seen. It's not flashy or sleek, but "sexy" in a way. The best-looking desktop interface I have ever seen.

I have never installed Solaris on one of my personal computers, but I have been using it at school for about four weeks. All the computer science students at my university have to use it to do all of their programming. I am actually using it to post this message. I don't know anything about the Solaris GUI because I do all my work at the command line. I use bash of course. Csh is a piece of crap!

I have used Solaris at my wifes University, not impressed at all...it's like using Linux 5 years ago at best...
It does funky things in the Opera browser also?
I have burned the CD's and tried an install unsuccessfully

I like it because I do a lot of java development for school so I keep it around for that. Overall, I can't do with the lack of hardware support. There is just way too much unsupported hardware, not to mention no video drivers from ati at all. But for java development it is the best by far, no work screwing around with all the hoops linux makes you go through.
