Not sure what Dolphin is but Ill be more than happy to upload the files I had to change or any links to the files I used. I thought about making a how to cause Ive seen all the ones done for Gnome and I couldnt find any that show how to configure KDE to look like OS X. I added a screenshot to kde-look (http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=52541) it has a better theme for liquid weather on it then the one I posted here. Actually you cant see it to well.

you should do a 'howto'. that looks pretty good. i've always found osx's dark themes to be really great looking (but not enough to buy a mac).

'dolphin' is a file manager for kde. supposedly, it will be installed, along with konqueror, in kde4 by default. it will work in any wm, though. i've used it in openbox. it seems like it will eventually be to konqueror what thunar is to nautilus ( [ah]avis[/choo!] ).

This is my February theme:

-My gtk theme is my own custom re-write of xfce-winter
-My Emerald theme is my own called "rusted", it is a variation of my theme "moonglow" on Beryl Themes at: http://themes.beryl-project.org/theme_details.php?id=34
-My icons are Human_Ultra_Violet from here: http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=46010
-My Browser is PimpZilla, but Cylence Diamond also looks good with it.
-My Beryl Skydome is a Graffiti piece by Doze Green that I made into a skydome using GIMP.
-My Beryl Cap is the same Graffiti piece by Doze Green, in it's original form.
-My Wallpaper is also a Graffiti piece by Doze Green that I turned into a Wallpaper using Gimp.
-The font I use is called Judas and is here: http://www.dafont.com/search.php?q=Judas
-Conky 1.4.5 with my own custom .conkyrc using Judas font (I will post it if you ask)

All the images I used were found on Google images and took some GIMP work to create the wallpaper and skydome. I don't post any of it to share because it's just for my personal enjoyment. Doze Green and Salvador Dali are my favorite two artists, so I enjoy his art as my desktop environment.

I really like this theme. Could you share a few more details? What WM and border theme are you using? I looked for the wall on gnome look using the file name from the screen shot but couldn't find it.

I also copied your conky idea but went with a bit more info.

Does anyone know how to get conky to center across the bottom? It seems to only center on either the right or left. Also, can you make conky go all the way across? If I try a long line of text it gets chopped after the middle of the screen.

Thanks.

Anyway, here is what I'm working on. Emerald theme is a modified from crimesaucer's theme.

Thanks. I think I still have a ways to go but thanks to this thread (and the previous n months) I'm learning. Although mostly I just copy everyone else. The .emerald is just a color variation on yours (thanks btw). I don't like the icons though. I can never find a good theme I like and end up changing them individually and then they end up rather jumbled. I'd really love to find an excellent and complete icon theme.

The wall is supposed to look like a watercolor but I don't know if it really was. I found it following some link in one of the desktop threads. I send you a copy via pm.

@ m.musashi- Well, I think your use of colors was really nice. As for icons, I really like the ones fuscia recommended, the Human_Ultra pack, and the Human_Effect pack. I'll check my mail for the link to the wallpaper.

@ fuscia- Speaking of New Orleans, check out his piece about the floods of 2005: http://www.whitewallssf.com/pages/doze_pg.html

The art is incredible, but it's too depressing for me to put it on my desktop.

Laptop this month. I'm still not entirely happy with the background (it's from DeviantArt) - I can't seem to find a dark background that I really like. And the Tomboy and Trash icons in the bottom panel don't play nicely.

Emerald theme is Scaled Black (seems to be a popular one this month!).
GTK theme is Darker theme, from Gnome Look.
Icons are Vista-Inspirate 1.0, from Gnome Look, except the last.fm one, which was from DeviantArt.
Font is Luxi Sans, but I guess it's not that evident from the shots. I just find it a bit more polished than the default sans.

These aren't scaled black. They are themes that use the v-runner engine, and the pix map buttons from scaled black. Everything else is totally different, not a single setting is even close to scaled black. I could of used any button theme in any version of an Emerald theme, or no pix map button themes at all and just used the default close buttons, but I felt the scaled black button theme to be the most unique of all the Emerald themes (different then osx, vista, kde, and gnome). In fact, if you download moonglow, and compare every setting to scaled black, you will see how they are very different. Even the use of the buttons are different since I used the menu button to set a "set above" and "unset" button since I find them more useful features for working with GIMP or any other app that I want to always have on top and visible.

My next themes might use the minimal pix map buttons, unless I how learn to make my own.

@ fuscia- Speaking of New Orleans, check out his piece about the floods of 2005: http://www.whitewallssf.com/pages/doze_pg.html

The art is incredible, but it's too depressing for me to put it on my desktop.

nice site. i'm surprised you find it depressing, but only as it didn't occur to me at all.

btw, do you think their exhibition layout is designed to keep people from right-clicking on the images and saving them, or was it just a neat look? (i like it, but it's not particularly effective, if the former.)

crimesaucer

It, might be flash for that reason or just for the cleanness of a nice flash site, all though there are a lot of images on Google images and other sites of his work. As for the depressing thing, it's just the Haliburton and Divine Haliburton's deaths in the flood and the way the shelter at the superdome was handled is a bit too depressing to look at everyday on my desktop, so I chose his more mystical works that have a slightly different energy. I would rather have something more like this "Oye Querida" from here in the Recent Works Gallery: http://www.dozegreen.com/

Once again it's a flash site so no right clicks.

@ m.musashi- Well, I think your use of colors was really nice. As for icons, I really like the ones fuscia recommended, the Human_Ultra pack, and the Human_Effect pack. I'll check my mail for the link to the wallpaper.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. I tried to check these out but only the violet version seems to install for some reason. I extracted them all and copied to my .theme but that didn't work. Dragging the tar.bz to the theme manager worked but only installed violet. Oh well, I'll keep playing.

This is basically the same but with human-strange icons. I did play around with conky a bit more. Man, what a pain in the a** to get everything to line up. It's not really the way I envisioned but after an hour or so I gave up. I wish the directions on the conky site were a bit more descriptive.

I think it depends on the particular theme you are using. I know some of the standard themes don't let the menu bar, date and such go transparent when you select that option. I have no idea why, I just know that if I pick a different theme I can get it to work. There may be a way to fix that without changing the theme but I don't know what it is. In the meantime, try some different themes on gnome-look. I'm sure there will be one that works for you.

In Murrine at least (Don't know about other themes), If you go into the ~/.themes/Murrina*/gtk-2.0 folder and hand edit the gtkrc file using gedit (or whatever you use) you'll see that at the top of the file there are 2 lines which look like:

gtk-icon-sizes = "panel-menu=32,32"
include "panel/panel-aq.rc"

Delete or add # to these lines and you'll remove the panel colouring command.
That's how I did it, anyway.

I've been wanting to try this so I finally decided to install it. It's pretty easy to install and looks nice and familiar but I don't think I'm going to leave Ubuntu. In fact, as soon as my feisty CD downloads this install is going the way of the dodo. Is it just me or are the Ubuntu servers really slow or just very popular. For those of you running feisty that have metacity 2.17.5, you can have more buttons on your metacity themes but you'll have to add them to the theme and a metacity-theme-2.xml. See the Bright and Crux themes for howto, then add the buttons you want to gconf-editor>apps>metacity>general>button_layout
menu:above,stick,shade,minimize,maximize,close

If anyone can read the src and tell me how to change the variable roundness of the corners in the -2.xml I'd appreciate it. You can compile 2.17.5 for compositing but I have not done so yet. Info here

it's gnome with Human gtk theme. I use PF Theme Sepia (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=49311) for emerald.
And about the wallpaper, I forgot to mention it, I got it from customize.org (http://www.customize.org/details/48277). I was doing random browsing when I found it :D
The icon is Buuf-iconset (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php?content=46201).

Does anyone know how to get conky to center across the bottom? It seems to only center on either the right or left. Also, can you make conky go all the way across? If I try a long line of text it gets chopped after the middle of the screen.
I haven't tested yet, but maybe you can set the conky to use the same width as your resolution :)

Anyway, here is what I'm working on. Emerald theme is a modified from crimesaucer's theme.

He asked me to make an ish like metacity/beryl for murrine but I couldn't imagine what that would be, and didn't have time. If nothing else, I now know how to as well. Thanks for enlightening us all. Although I seem to recall a question last month about transparent handles and the general consensus being that you can't do it. Is the panel background different in this respect or would that also work for handles?

Thanks, Hahah, 'memory bloated'. I've always loved eye candy no matter the cost...I've got a good overclocked system so I don't notice any slowdown. I must say though...Vista can get pretty sluggish after a few programs are loaded.

When I switched from XP/Vista to Ubuntu I was amazed how the swap file usage was always at 0 MB. Linux actually uses my Ram unlike windows :P :D

I was about to say that it looked like object dock or rocket dock, I think rocket dock is better. I have it on my Xp dual partition, I find I don't need a dock for my xubuntu.

I noticed you had CCleaner. I like to use that, AdAware and Spyware Blaster to keep Windows clean. Also various registry cleaners form File Hippo or Softpedia. I pretty much only use Windows for utorrent (and my iriver) because I have it optimized for speed and I don't know if I can do the same in wine. (and iriver t-30 ums will not load properly on xubuntu)

wine to the rescue

grab the latest exe from utorrent.com

download wine, sudo apt-get install wine

and then right click on the exe, and write open program with "wine"

and tada, everything works perfectly, i have been doing it for a while now.

EDIT: Ooops, didnt see the full post. what do you mean optomized by speed? give wine a try and see what happens.

'pollock ripoff'? i don't think so. that was found with the dead sea scrolls. only a miracle could account for the color remaining so vibrant after all those centuries. pollock's stuff looks more like a park statue's shoulder than that. this thing looks more like a paul jenkins.

@ BOBSONATOR- I use this guide for making my utorrent extremely fast on Windows Xp (so fast), and I don't know if you can set it the same way using wine (plus I read about all of the flickering and other problems and I figured that I'd wait for them to port it to linux): http://forum.utorrent.com/viewtopic.php?id=3912

Using that guide and following every tip with the speed ratios set for a T1 cable hook-up really makes a difference.

@ fuscia- That's one of my favorite Opera themes. I'm using a different one now, but I always liked the buttons and scroll bars for that one.

...also, this is my newest variation of my Xfce-rusted theme, I have added a gradient to my Thunar's toolbars:

What, exactly is the secret there? I arch that fast? I read a review of 6.10 in some Linux magazine (Linux User or something maybe) and the guy said it booted for him in 20 seconds. Mine takes 45 secs (not counting the time to type my username and password) from grub to desktop and I have a 2.4ghz athlon x2. Technically that should trump your laptop (not that I'm dissing on your laptop - I'm sure it's very nice). I have no idea what that review was using buy my setup ain't no dog.

I love it, the thumbnail is active too. Say you have a video open on your second monitor (a common occurrence for me) and you need to switch inputs but don't want to pause the video; just hover over the window in the bar and up pops the video, chugging away unflinchingly. Holy crap I love this WM. I can't wait until the RC hits the repos.

[Edit] Here's a screen shot, not that you can tell that it's moving. I guess you'll have to trust me on it if you don't have Beryl installed :)
[Edit 2] I guess I should give credit to FLCL episode 1 for modeling for my screen shot. My stats are on page 5 of this thread if anyone is curious

Yup.

No offense taken. I know my machine is a dog, but still ... my 300Mhz Pentium II is booting Grub to desktop 6 seconds faster than your 2.4Ghz.

The thing is, a server install of 6.10 boots on this in about 1:10, without any special tricks or tweaks. A base installation of Arch on the same machine will boot in less than 45 seconds without tricks or tweaks.

If I only use Openbox and tweak everything short of recompiling, I can trim Ubuntu's boot down to around 61 seconds at best. But with Arch and even fewer tweaks, I can knock it down to about 36.75 seconds (Timex method ;) ).

It's not that Ubuntu is necessarily bloated, it's just that Arch starts with nothing, and you build up from there. So there's no added weight. For what I've seen, Arch also gives you better control over the initial booting phases, and you can carve out unnecessary things that you don't need or don't want. (And there's that whole precompiled for i686 thing. )

So if you know your hardware, you can win back a lot of speed. It's worth looking in to.I'm sure if you could get your machine running with Arch, you'd probably boot in less than half the time it takes me.

Pretty simple desktop here; no flashy stuff to get in the way, nothing YouTube worthy. Heck, when I use OS X, I use a machine that has the UNO theme installed and I run ShadowKiller. :)

Here's my current KDE desktop:

Style/Theme: QtCurve with a custom Dull Glass look (available at http://kde-look.org)
Window decoration: Crystal, Knifty buttons, custom colorscheme and overlays
Icons: the once-nearly-ubiquitous nuoveXT. They remind me of NeXT icons. Judging by the name, I guess that was the intent. :)
Colorscheme: Inspired by Aqua Graphite, UNO (http://gui.interacto.net), and (don't laugh) Adobe Photoshop Elements. Really, their interface looks seriously slick.

A reasonably dark theme, better for my eyes ;)
Ubuntu 6.06 LTS with Gnome.
Theme is Murrina Weakness (gnome-look.org)
Iconset is Buuf (gnome-look.org), one of the best iconsets out there imho
Wall comes from deviantart but I don't remember the exact name, it can be ofund in the vector wallpaper department.
Font is Frutiger Linotype.

I like them altogether looks good and indeed relaxing for the eye.
I still used to stick for brighter themes, unfortunately webpages tend to be bright and the contrast kills me.

I'm starting to get sick of my usual. I've centered around Milky themes ever since I got Breezy way back last spring. AlphaCube, Milke etc.. I also typically use some sort of blue backdrop. Very minimal. Now, I'm playing with black themes.. Which would you guys pick?

Darker Theme GTK and VistaButRounded Meta? or Blackened-Gray with Clearlooks Meta?

It's a toss up to me.. Either way, it's a refreshing change.

.conkyrc is attached here 25096. As I have it set it uses a custom command to query the hard drive temperature. See here: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=282353

Background is from the NovumOS set here (I believe there is now a linux version of the complete theme out there somewhere): http://www.deviantart.com/deviation/29770784/

Nothing much changed, but I was able to get conky running the way I wanted.

Here's a clean screen shot of it running. It isn't anything fancy, but it's all I really care to know about my system. All of the theme elements are the same and can be found in my earlier post in this thread.

Also attached is the conkyrc file.

Thanks, I wish I could say I had some hand in its development. I googled for dual screen wallpaper and that was the best one I found.

It works really well, too, because the black sheep is on my TV which is usually off or on a station. When people ask me about the sheep I click over the input, it usually gets some amused laughter out of the person.

Yes, amused laughter.

My Windows from a long long time ago. I can't remember what desktop thing I was using, but I came across this recently, and figured I'd put it in here seeing as how there are many beryl users who post here. Oh, it says right there in the screenshot, sphere XP. :)

I just did that as a (poor) attempt at humor. :D

It is the current svn version of fluxbox with the toolbar set to autohide, gkrellm minimized, and a quick "fbsetroot -solid black" for good measure. ;) I have a script running that randomly rotates the wallpaper every five minutes (I have over 50,000). Actually, the script changed the background about two seconds after I took that screenshot.

Since after months of trials I've been able to install Beryl again, with AIGLX this time (after realising my graphics card was not a Mobility Radeon 9000, but 7500... long story), I just set it up today.

It's electronic-music-oriented. I think it reflects my musical tastes :)

I just wonder if there's a way to manage multiple desktops better... I can see all the open applications from all the workspaces in my taskbar, and if I put the pager in the panel, it doesn't work properly... a bit annoying that...
