Xorg with built-in AIGLX.

From what I understand, your question is completely pointless. You may as well have asked "Car or Ham sandwich?"
Metisse is a Window Manager, without it you can't get any of the jazzy features metisse offers. Beryl and Compiz are 2 other window managers that take advantage of 3D acceleration to make all these effects.
XGL and AIGLX are what make it all possible, they provide everything that is needed for 3D acceleration (correct me if I'm wrong).
You can not compare XGL/AIGLX/Xorg and Metisse as they are all completely different things.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong =)

Assuming you meant beryl by XGL, I voted XGL
The only thing I want from Metisse is the desktop layout plugin.
Otherwise its beryl for me.

I use beryl and xgl, nothing more, nothing less.

metisse is a server, the modified fvwm is the WM;
So the question reads
AIGLX + Compiz/Beryl
XGL + Compiz/Beryl
XMetisse + Modified FVWM
Other
btw, i vote for metisse because it works with my graphic card (via unichrome), while compiz and beryl don't.

Isn't Metisse just the Window Manager, like Beryl and Compiz? That's what it says on Mandriva's site:
Metisse is a window manager developped by the In Situ project.

well Mandriva's site's wrong :D

Metisse [1] is an X-based window system designed with two goals in mind. First, it should make it easy for HCI researchers to design and implement innovative window management techniques Second, it should conform to existing standards and be robust and efficient enough to be used on a daily basis, making it a suitable platform for the evaluation of the proposed techniques.

metisse is an X-based window system

i stand corrected on that one, though metisse could not live without a costum fvwm,
since metisse is in the category of window compositing.

neither XGL without Compiz/Beryl -__-'
did you mind to read this page? http://insitu.lri.fr/metisse/ or post #8 ?

Ok, so some days it's a Window Manager and other days it's a window system.... what the hell is it  :D
On Mandriva's site it says it's a Window Manager, on the Metisse site it says it's a Window System, the Wikipedia article about Metisse say it's both!
Metisse is a 2.5D windowing system, based on the X Window System. Metisse is available as a window manager for Mandriva One 2007
Maybe Metisse is, normally, a window system, but Mandriva have worked with them to make it into a Window manager instead?

well then I think
XMetisse is the custom X-Server, FVWM-insitu and its plugin is the WM, Metisse is then the name chosen by mandriva for the whole project (just to do some confusion)

yes and what about it? i think it still is fvwm replacing metacity, judging from mandriva's video
its hardly metacity due to its unsmooth edges.

It can't be Metacity. Metacity is just another Window Manager, like Compiz, Beryl and Kwin, but Metacity does not have any 3D effects

yup, that's what i'm trying to say, it is fvwm-insitu instead of metacity
on top of gnome

Yeah but the confusing comes when defining exactly what Metisse is. Mandriva's website says it's a Window Manager, Metisses site says it's a Windowing System, while Wikipedia says it's both. That's what were trying to work out what it is.

If I could get Beryl with Metisse effects, I'd die happy. ;)
Of course, I'd have to build a machine that could run it first. But it might be worth it.
