View Full Version : New GTKWifi release - 1.06
bsoft
May 15th, 2005, 07:13 PM
GTKWifi 1.06 is out. The new release is a minor performance update; with it, GTKWifi no longer starts a new instance of gtkwifi-settings-client every time it needs to make a change. The new version starts a single instance and communicates through a pipe.
You can get the new release at:
gtkwifi-1.10.deb (http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gtkwifi/gtkwifi-1.10.deb?modtime=1168360327&big_mirror=0)
Install with "dpkg -i gtkwifi-1.10.deb".
Thanks,

This Applet shoudn't be included in Ubuntu, it should be integrated in Gnome because it is really necessary.
Ideas for next version:
- Post a .po to traduce it to different languajes as Ubuntu BootUp Manager
- Make an icon mode, so we can see the applet as an icon or as text or as text an icon (In icon mode, text could be shown as tooltip).
- Add a menu item to show the main window (Select acces point).
- I think the preferences dialog is not good, since any preferences can be choosen. It could be named information or properties, and do a preferences dialog for example for changing the appearence.
- Perhaps the preferences dialog could be integrated in the main windows showing four tabs (Select acces point, Preferred Networks, Secure networks, wireless cards).
What do you think about this ideas?

.po - Absolutely. Localization is always important. I just haven't had enough time lately to do it.
Icon - Yeah, I've thought about this, along with the "mobile phone bars" for signal strength. It's again a problem of time.
Preference Dialog - Hmmmmm. I understand where you're coming from. Right now, the app doesn't really have any "preferences" - at least not in the traditional sense. I may rename the dialog later.
Same window - That sounds interesting, but I'd prefer to keep the main window tidy and sparse. It's already a bit crowded. Not to mention the problem of integrating what is essentially a dismissable dialog with a preference screen - the UI doesn't quite work out.

Question: Does GTKwifi do anything to help with dropped wireless connections inherent in the version of ipw2200 that comes with Hoary? What is the difference between this and the wifi program we can download from Synaptic?

Is GTKWifi the equivalent to "view available networks" feature on XP? If so, can someone please post instructions on how to install for this Noob...thx.

Yea, it is similar to the Networking Tool in XP. You should be able to search for available networks with it (if ubuntu recognizes your card as being able to support network scanning) as well as connect to them. here is a quick and dirty guide to installing it:
download the package here:
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/...06.deb?download
Remember where you save it to and then once it is finished downloading crank open a terminal:
Change into the directory where you saved it to:
cd /towhere/you/saved
sudo dpkg -i gtkwifi-1.06.deb
It should install with that, but you might want to run:
killall gnome-panel
That should restart your gnome panel. Then you can add the utility by right clicking on the panel and selecting "Add to Panel" and then looking for "Wireless Connection Manager" or something of that sort.
Hope that helps

Does not seem to work with the Kubuntu release.. I don't consider myself a n00b anymore..
When I first loaded kubuntu the root thing missing messed me up. I am not the most experienced linux user out there but I have been using debian for some time (sick of windows..)
I first found this package network-manager .. I had more luck configuring my atheros pcmcia card via root then through it.. there is something wrong with it .. I am not use to auto connect.. such fancy features
Anyway, I always been use to kde Gnome was way to behind when I was using it years ago.. none the less I am in KDE.. i tryed to install but its got way to many dependancies.. anyone recommend a deb repository ..

Since the current GTKWifi release is 1.09, this thread shouldn't be a sticky!
The instructions on page 2 are great, though, and for those of us who get sent here from a page with a vague reference to the project it would be great to have an upfront description that this is a panel applet. When I downloaded it I knew roughly what it was supposed to do--it does it very well, too--but I had no idea if it was an app or where I should look for it.

Sorry for being a noob, but this is how I went about installing the .deb package.
In Terminal:
sudo dpkg -1 gtkwifi-1.09.deb
I think it installs it... but I'm not sure where it installed to lol. Could someone pretty please walk to me through installation of this and where to find it? haha I can't seem to get this installl thing down... maybe its because I can't get an internet connection off of my Microsoft MN-520 PCMCIA card. ><

Does GTKWifi work with WPA/WPA2 connections (assuming wpasupplicant is installed and configured properly)? The SourceForge Project Page (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gtkwifi) mentions only WEP support, so I'm assuming WPA/WPA2 isn't supported. On the other hand, I haven't seen anyone (either here or on the SourceForge site) request/suggest that WPA/WPA2 support be added, so maybe it's already included. Can anyone confirm one way or the other?
Edit: Never mind. I discovered the GTKWifi sub-forum and confirmed WPA/WPA2 isn't supported.

I was looking for this thing for a while. But I have a problem
I goto School. The wireless (ssid name) is the name of school. They have open network and they give access to only students through MAC address filtering meachnism.
When I start gtkwifi, it show me around 10 netwoks with the same name (i.e my school name) but with different router MAC addresses.
Ideally, it should connect to the one with the best signal strength. But it connects to some low signal strength and my connection drops every now and then. How can I fix this problem
thanks

lilolpete: from the command line you start gtkwifi using:
sudo gtkwifi run-in-window
There should be a shortcut made either in applications or system menu with an icon (nudge nudge hint hint @ bsoft ;) ) and you can use the alacarte menu editor to make a shortcut for the above command.

and another thing - there's 2 missing images:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/gtkwifi", line 1525, in refreshinfo
locked_icon = gtk.gdk.pixbuf_new_from_file(settings.icon_lock)
gobject.GError: Failed to open file '/usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/stock/data/stock_lock.png': No such file or directory
and
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/gtkwifi", line 1558, in refreshinfo
active_icon = gtk.gdk.pixbuf_new_from_file(settings.icon_active)
gobject.GError: Failed to open file '/usr/share/icons/hicolor/16x16/stock/generic/stock_mark.png': No such file or directory
I've put a couple of icons to replace the two missing ones above... do you know why it might do this? I know that it wouldn't show me the available networks until I did replace the icons... but it's a good thing there isn't a menu shortcut, else I wouldn't have started it from the command line and wouldn't have known what's going on....
By the way:
I'm on Dapper Flight 6, using broadcom wifi provided by my asus a6k laptop (which has over a gig of ram, so there may be other problems with connections, as per http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=653894&postcount=11 and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WifiDocs/Driver/Broadcom43xx) and just installed gtkwifi 1.09.
thanks for the good work, guys! :KS

where did you find the icons and where do you change them exactly?
sorry if it's obvious from the code you included above, but i loved using an older version of this applet and when i tried the new one it looked a bit too ugly and didn't show me the available networks...did you install from the deb?
does the tar have the icons with it?

The icons look like they're in /usr/share/icons/gnome/16x16/... (replace hicolor with gnome). I just copied them from there, but this should probably be fixed in the code by someone. I'm running the latest dapper, so I thought my icon configuration was pretty standard...

How come it displays weird % ranging from about 500 up to 3000 percent until I get connected and I have to click the percent to get a list of available networks?
Thanks. I love it so far, the UI just seems a little weird. Maybe I'm missing an image or something though.

I've managed to persuade GTKWifi 1.06 to run with a Linksys WUSB54G under ndiswrapper on Dapper (thanks bsoft & xhaker - nice applet!).
I had to modify gtkwifi-settings-client to submit a simple single key in the format "iwconfig key open FFFFFFFFFF" rather than "iwconfig key open FFFFFFFFFF [1]; iwconfig key [1]", as this card/driver doesn't appear to support multiple keys.
If any of this would be useful to anyone, let me know, and I'll post the files (if that's ok with bsoft).
regards, P.
footnote - this problem has already been resolved in the 1.09 deb available on sourceforge, although the newer version still has the icon problems mentioned previously.

Same thing happens here. I'm on a Dell Inspiron 8100 with a D-Link AirXpert card. I'm using the latest madwifi drivers.
When I put the applet on the gnome-panel it kills my existing connection and never finds any networks. It continues not working even after I remove it from the panel. To make it work again, I have to not only remove it from the panel but also run
ifconfig myinterface down
-- remove pcmcia card and reinsert it --
ifconfig myinterface up

Ok, so I'm actually using v1.09, but I want to give a HUGE "Thank You!" to everyone that helped create this little applet. I'm running edgy on my G4 iBook w/ AirportExtreme, and in case you weren't aware, getting wireless working is a frigging nightmare! Thanks to this applet, however, I am happily typing this on my school's unsecured wireless network. I'll test it tonight on my WEP network at home.

when i first added kde/kubuntu to breezy there used to be an applet for gtkwifi that worked within the kde system panel. is this no longer available? i like knetworkmanager but i'd like to see how the more secure network options with gtkwifi would work with kde.

I'm having problems with GTKWifi. It didn't work under Breezy, and still isn't working under Dapper. When I add it to the panel, the panel freezes and stays freezed after reboot. When I remove my wifi card and start the computer the panel says "No Card", and that seems proper.
Have anyone else got it to work with the same card as I have?
I'm on an Asus Aspire 1355LC with a D-Link DWL-AG650 wifi card.
edit: the card is based on the Atheros Chipset

ummm, I am a newb just barely installed ubuntu 6.10 on my iBook G4, and it took me a while to find anything about making my wireless card work. And now that I have found it I downloaded GTKWifi 1.09 to the desktop and cannot figure out how to install it. Sorry it this is a really newbie post but I cannot figure it out to save my life, I think the problem is that I cannot change the directory....

I've installed 1.09 on Ubuntu 6.10 and am having trouble. I show networks, but is extremely slow. Its like running photshop in windows, it kinda slows everything down. Also, connecting to networks never works so I end up un-installing it and reverting back to basic System > Admin > Networking. If this did work, it would be so cool! To bad it doesnt for me T_T

This looks and sounds like a great program.
Before I install it, can anyone tell me if it works with WPA/WPA2? These are the types of networks that I'm running on, and before I loose my connections, I'd like to know if some one has this running on it.
Thanks.

Either run this in the terminal:
gtkwifi run-in-window
or right click your panel/task bar and select it from the "Add to Panel" listing under "Utilities" as "Wireless Conections Manager" I believe.

will this package run under KDE or is it strictly for Gnome?? I mean, I know it's all still Ubuntu but in order to use GTKWifi, it seems you need the Gnome panel to work with it. In earlier versions, it came with a panel applet for KDE as well. Does anyone know if it still does? I'm wanting to try an alternate to Network Manager as it's possible it may be causing some of my freezing on shutdown/restart. Possible but I need a replacement before I uninstall it and try to see if it fixes the problem. This was suggested as an alt but I need it to run under Kubuntu.

Oh well. No one in their right mind (who knows about wireless) uses WEP anymore.

1.Does Apache can run in ubuntu ?
2.How I can install apache into ubuntu?
3.The apache version ,which one can install into ubuntu, and want to know GCC like linux can run to build other software?

yzhou, your post has nothing to do with GTKWifi.
Please create a new thread for your questions next time.
Apache2 can be installed in Ubuntu:
sudo aptitude install apache2
The version is: 2.2.8 that can be installed with Ubuntu 8.04
GCC can be used to compile any software.
Perhaps the mods should move these posts to a more appropriate place?
My apologies for replying to an irrelevant post / thread.
