I'm trying to find a way to open and use .sit files. I believe these were created on a MAC but definitely created with Adobe InDesign. Are they just a compressed file or is it a definite "format" that can be opened by InDesign directly. I've tried Scribus but no joy. Any suggestions anyone?

.sit is like .zip, a compressed file format. On Mac OS you need StuffIT expander to decompress the files, as far as I know sit is a strictly proprietary format owned by Stuffit, and they don't like to give licences away... so there is not a lot of apps decompressing that.
Probably the .sit file contains the .indd and anyway, I doubt you'll have any luck opening that ones you've decompressed it with scribus.

Scribus can't open InDesign (indd) files.

Here is StuffIt Expander for Linux, it's free, but proprietary. Extract it and go to /docs/unstuff/unstuff.html to figure out how to use it. and like previously mentioned .indd files on linux can't be opened (probably)

Thanks everyone. I do have InDesign for windows although an old copy. If I can uncompress the file in Ubuntu and move it to XP, load and save in another format compatible with Scribus I'll be a happy camper. Although it'll be a lot of work. There's numerous files I've got to convert. I just enjoy working in the Ubuntu environment much more than XP..

File Roller apparently supports .sit (stuffit) archives: http://fileroller.sourceforge.net/features.html

Although for whatever reason, 2.18.1 in Ubuntu Feisty can't.

You have to install a sit decompressor just like you have to install unrar or 7zip. File-roller doesn't decompress the files by itself because what really happens is that it "calls" the command line tools to do the job.

Do you know the package name?

This wiki: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SwitchingToUbuntu/FromMacOSX says that Ubuntu can read .sit files. I can't. Doesn't anyone know the package to install to open Stuffit files? I've search Synaptic endlessly, have all the repositories from Ubuntu Guide and am using Feisty.

Sorry 'bout that.. I didn't think to read above the last post. I just remembered making a note of the program to give it a try later.. Did it not work for you?

It does say that. But it doesn't actually open them in Gutsy.

You have to install a sit decompressor just like you have to install unrar or 7zip.

How do you do that?
