Erm i really dunno if this happens to anyone else but sometimes my desktop icons dissapear and logging out was the only way to return them (which is never good). However i have since found that:

killall nautilus

Resets them and open nautilus at the same time. This is the only workaround and as i said i dunno if it happen's to everyone but it happens to me and this is how i solved it.

Same thing append to me, it's really annoying cause I use at least 2 usb storage, and I have the habit to access them by the desktop.

Thanks for the workaround, it will be great if someone have a idea of the cause

Thanks for the tip, I've been having this problem, too, since upgrading to Hoary.

Just happy a could help. I'm a n00b see so finding something like this that benafits others kinda makes me feel like i am learning.

Yes this only happened to me when i upgraded to hoary. If someone know's what causes this it would benafit those of us that suffer from this problem.
