Has anyone had a look at Symphony OS (http://www.symphonyos.com/). It seems quite an interesting distribution.

the Mezzo desktop idea seem very user friendly.

has anyone actually tried it?

Hmm.. the Mezzo mockup looks GREAT. The screenshots, on the other hand, do not. This is still in early stages though. Looks promising!

wiat what? If I'm reading that right, the only installation possibility will overwrite your whole drive. That ain't good

Mock ups look like they're based on Knoppix (Debian)

looks like a custom package format that you can install with a link from the website. http://www.symphonyos.com/apps2/

there is a torrent file for alpha 3 which is also a live cd. I tried it out shortly but I was a bit disappointed, maybe it was also me.
1. it's based on knoppix, right
2. the desktop was horror, don't know if that's because I wasn't able to set it right somehow with fcmw or if it's like that at the moment because it's alpha.
I wanted to see a desktop which looks lilke the one on the screenshots.

I'll give later pre-releases a shot again.

"The current package format is cmg this is the format used by klik. They are pretty easy to make. Because cmg file support is still pretty buggy it will be augmented by synaptic for apt in the next release using the debian repositories."

It is apt-get, but never tried out yum, just yet, I had it running just last night and it's great, but, it lacks so much capabilities that you really need to enjoy a desktop, over all, I like fvwm ;)

yum, yellowdog updater modified (http://linux.duke.edu/projects/yum/). yeah, you basically do

yum install xine

and it checks dependancies, downloads all the rpms, and installs them.

it can be a bit of a pain though. it does the equivilent of a apt-get update, before each operation. it also does not continue half downloaded packages. it wont restart services. i dont think it deals with config files either.

but its a start.

"but it's a start"

Yeah, that's the problem ;) I don't know why people use yum in their distributions anymore when apt-rpm and urpmi exist. I've never used yum extensively without breaking things (and that's with the default, stable repositories)

Ha! that was 8am, sorry :p I know yum is a package manager like apt, doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that one :D

P.S thanks for correcting me on that ;)

the concept art looks promising, i like the idea of your programs being in thumbnails when minimized in the taskbar

the buttons at each corner are a interesting idea, but i still dont like em ^^

In small words, it's still missing a lot, but does look great, I wouldn't use it :p

... sort of like the OS X dock ;)

Too much of the linux desktop looks like a Windows95 clone, with the taskbar and desktop icons etc. I guess you need to offer potential switchers something that they feel comfortable with, but open source should also be trying to rethink the GUI and be innovative -- Symphony looks like it has a lot of good ideas!

Promising. I'd like to know how I'd would go against other distros/OS's performance & package management.

I tried it out on my laptop a while back. I personally love the desktop. First desktop that is really intuitive. Has the main programs you need right in your face. Much better than little icons or start menus.

Anyway, I love and will most likely use it in the future when they get past the alpha stage. Meanwhile I wish there was a way to get the mezzo desktop onto Ubuntu.... :D

Its concept sounds very promissing, however, its in an early stage, I asked about video and the response was that its not supported @ this time.. but it is coming, they are working very swiftly on getting their OS stable and up/running w/ its flavor and view of the world...

I'll try it out when I can be bothered to torrent a copy of it... It *looks* nice, but at this early stage it might not perform like one would expect it to.
