Where to find a basic HowTo on compiling & creating packages

Sorry if this has been posted before, but I'm looking for a HOWTO.
I had kinda hoped it would be a sticky here, but it's not.

Any simple examples somewhere?

What kind of packages? Maybe this link to the Ubuntu Packaging Guide (http://doc.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/packagingguide/C/index.html) will help
