I can second this: turning off compiz/beryl can help. I don't know if you're running XGL, but the last time I used it, I experienced quite some problems with games.
Try running a non-XGL session with compiez/beryl turned off, then post your experiences.

I have the same problem with the black screen but have sound. I have an EMachines C3070 with an AMD Athalon 64 Processor and a NVIDIA Ge Force4 MX Integrated GPU and the real trick of this is that I play America's Army just fine but for Enemy Territory and Counter Strike 1.6 they are where the problems lie. So any one who knows how to help me plz help!

Could you remind us the exact error message you get when starting et from the console (without compiz or beryl running)?

Then paste the log you get from the terminal while running et because it is where we are more likely to find useful informations about what could create the problem.
You can also post your xorg.conf, it might also help if there's anything wrong in.

how can i get back to the terminal, if the whole screen is black? the only way that i can think of is to restart my X server, which would close the terminal.

here is my xorg.conf

Try a command like that :
et >& debug.logIt should send the terminal output to a file called debug.log in the directory where you ran the command thus you could see the log and hopefully post it here.

It is strange, i never saw this kind of messages, it seems that you have a problem with preset_high_ui.cfg script, check thet it really exist under $HOME/.etwolf/etmain and maybe try to install again ET.

first, i dont wanna post to such questions any more - reason, for those who know, is obvious.

next what was posted:

there is no resolution for 800x600 in the x11 but the et-startup tries 800x600 ?
where are the pak1, pak2 files ?
after the failure of 800x600 it tries 1024x768 .... does switching works with your hardware?
why not setup your x11 server to 800x600 and run et first not as fullscreen?
Next you should be able to find hints about problems with different hardware, there was the ?ATI-driver-bug?, which could be solved with disable at startup like this:
et +set r_ext_compiled_vertex_array 0
then, maybe you have to trie an old et-version, not the updated (and sometime crashing) 2.60b. I doubt they (the one with hand on the main-engine-source) will ever fix it, it looks more they wanna have the game die. And if you have really problems with 3d-gfx, you first should try some of the games with full source available like q3ut4, ...

dbbolton, could you post also your xorg.conf file here ?

So we will see if there's any module, color depth or resolution issue.

PS: i'm not able to open your link i get a timeout answer.

my xorg.conf is in post #19 - i haven't changed it recently. the link i posted was to a thread on http://enemy-territory.4players.de called "how to properly install ET on linux".

Sorry dbbolton i forgot your previous post with the xorg.conf. Like alterpinguin suggested it you should add the 800x600 resolution in your xorg.conf. Then restart X and try et again.

The concerned part would look like that :
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
Device "Generic Video Card"
Monitor "Generic Monitor"
DefaultDepth 24
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 1
Modes "1280x960" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
