VLC seems to be the only way to play video files (although not as a plugin to firefox) how do you change the default from mplayer totem that it is set on

right click on a file, go to properties, then change the open with. This open with will be used for all files with that same filetype from now on.

No matter how many times i change that setting, the default player always reverts back to totem. can i uninstall totem?

Weird, it works just fine here after setting it once. Feel free to uninstall Totem then.
