web optimized graphics with GIMP. HOW?

I'm a web designer and from a while ago I'm changing my workflow to linux.
But I've found that GIMP is just awful for optimizing web graphics. Index color makes the bitmap look like a 1995 gif. There is no way (that I know) for making a nice 16 bits png.

How any of you deal with it?

Well right now I boot into Windows and fire up my ancient copy of Photoshop 7 or its partnered ImageReady, but if I weren't so darn lazy and fussy (a bad combination) I'd install it in Wine so I wouldn't have to reboot.

So, you are saying that there is no way of doing that only with GIMP?

When you say indexed makes the graphics look bad, have you tried playing around with the dithering settings? I've gotten decent results when converting to indexed by setting dithering to none.

When I said index make graphics looks bad I'm saing that I've played with every setting there is.
I'm not talking about make gimp look like fireworks. but It has to be something better

Thanks tiggs_the_cat. I believe I'll have to wait until 2.4 shows up since I don't want to compile the entire gimp.
I just hope this plugin gets in.

Have you tried flattening the image before indexing it? I find that helps me a lot.
