VMware now gives VMware Server for free.
You just need to ask for serial numbers when you register. The link for that is in the download page.

As to if it will work on AMD 64,,,I'm running the Edgy 64-bit on the Amd64 and as I'm typing this, I'm also installing XP in VM. <not that I want to,,I sort of need it to run one Proggy>

run the vmware-config.pl script to enter your serial. It will have you reconfigure everything, but the last step is the serial.

you will have to create a new virtual machine to install (from an iso I presume, but I have no clue what osx86 is).

note: I had trouble getting vmware running on edgy, so I went back to dapper.](*,)

vmware-config.pl does not exist, i have vmware-config-server-console.pl and outputted this
Configuring fallback GTK+ 2.4 libraries.

The configuration of VMware Server Console completed successfully.
