OK, here's the deal.

I like the transparency effects that one can get from using transset. Only problem is that I closed the application and open it again, the transparency is gone.

Now, is there a way to set certain apps transparency beforehand?

On a similar topic, is it possible to setup your windows so that the focussed window has 0% opacity and the unfocussed windows is transparent.

I believe that it is possible with Beryl and/or Compiz, but I don't really want to go route as I only have one computer, only have dail-up, and all my wife's work is stored on it.

Thanks,
E

Opaque foreground windows and transparent in the background? Yes, Compiz can do that. I used it for a while and it was a breeze to get running with Ubuntu Edgy and an old Geforce2 MX and it never once crashed on me, but it didn't feel very polished and it was sometimes a bit buggy in its implementation of window transparencies. I don't use it now because it can't do the specific things I wanted it to, yet has plenty of silly effects that are utterly useless for me. I really don't need my windows to wobble or my menus to disintegrate in a burst of flames. It just slows things down.

At this stage, practically all the Linux composite desktops are still in alpha-beta stages, so if you want guaranteed stability and polish it would probably be safest to leave them alone for a while - i.e., until they get closer to releasing Version 1.0 instead of 0.3.6 or 0.1.2. (It might be a bit of a wait, though.)
