I know we all read tech news and have seen the post on osnews.com and slashdot.org but just in case you are having an off day I figured I would report that Sun is giving away Solaris10 DVD sets for free (SPARC and x86 version included) just like Ubuntu's ShipIt..
http://www2.sun.de/dc/forms/reg_us_2211_391.jsp
Enjoy :)

SWEET. It's open source now right? I mean, not GPL, they made their own license.
THanks, this looks like more good stuff than Belenix and the other Live CD's

My first Unix (even before I knew about Windows) was SunOS 4.1.0 running on Sparc1 when I was in school. I still have Solaris 8 somewhere on the bookshelve that I played around for a while on my PC. Wish I have more PCs so I can play with Solaris again... ](*,)

I placed an order, if you wanna call it that....
Nexenta OS (http://www.gnusolaris.org/gswiki) is the solaris kernel and runtime built with gnu and uses debian package managment, but I believe uses ubuntu as the backbone, replaces the linux kernel with solaris might give this a whirl as well.

Yeah, I remember Solaris at school as well. It's one hell of a great operating system. Haven't played with it much in the last few years though. I placed an order. WOoT

Microsoft also did this (get Vista and Office WhateverTheNewOneIs for free), but they stopped (or ran out of discs is what their site says), so I won't give a URL, you can find it on /. if you really want, like I did.

Thats correct but seeing I live in deepest darkest africa i'll be more than happy with 15 business days
Then again mail to the UK takes less than a week so maybe I'll get lucky. For some odd reason stuff from the US takes longer.

That is because it takes us Americans longer to find it on the map. Joke at our expense.

I just read that Sun may dual license OpenSolaris (http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,2084284,00.asp) using the CDDL and GPlv3

Thanks a lot for this link. I have placed my order for it. Curious to see what it offers. I am curious about the apps unique to it and for extra knowledge. I definitly do not think I would be replacing any of my other older PCs though. Time will tell.

Has anybody received their copy already? And if so +- how long after placing the order?
I still haven't received anything...
Got a confirmation e-mail though so I guess I'll just have to be patient, well either that or the postman nicked it.

I placed my order a couple of days before Christmas and received it on Wednesday. If Paris takes 5 weeks, Africa might get shipments before June...

I am glad I am not the only one still waiting for it to come. I am not entirely sure that this is even legit. There is no mention of it on sun official site (I could be wrong though).

Tony's post above seems to indicate otherwise, so I have high hopes of receiving mine someday:

Alright, guess I'll just be patient then. It's not like I have any free time to mess around with it in the next few months anyway.

The application form is on a official sun site. The confirmation mail I received came from sun.
I don't see anything unofficial in the above ?

It has been two weeks plus for me as well. ShipIT is much faster. I may just giveup on this Solaris thing. Is it really good to use for desktop purpose?

If you have a laptop take care. The installer DVD has the fan shut down so you heat goes through the roof. This happened on a HP nx6110
Check your notebook fan to see if it is enable or not.

Got my DVD. Now on to installing. I want a totally seperate HDrive so I do not lose my already existent informations on the other partitions.
Any ideas on Sun Solaris.? Is it really worth the look or use?

I also have a seperate HD for **** like this. Cannot comment as the last version I tried was v8 and that was yonks ago.
Another option is to install to a VM like KVM, VMWare, VirtualBox etc.

I recieved mine after about a month. I got three discs in a pretty classy DVD case: Solaris for SPARC, Solaris for x86/amd64 and Devloper tools.
Thanks, Sun.

Ditto.
Now, what am I supposed to do with it, given that DesktopBSD et al don't recognise my wireless card (and am guessing that Solaris won't either)?
Free coasters! :)

Its an Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (copied from lspci).
Works out of the box with Ubuntu, but not supported by BSD as yet. I played around with DesktopBSD a few weeks ago but ended up chucking it for this reason. From what I discovered wireless is not very well supported with BSD at the moment, and I also think (but am not sure) that I read that the same was true for Solaris. If you know different though I'll be happy to give it a go :) - but no wi-fi is a complete showstopper for me.

I think FreeBSD is waiting for the OpenBSD port of the driver. But from what I can tell it is not ready yet.

I got mine Wednesday (sorry I haven't already posted, my computer broke down). It's a simple DVD case, with the x86/x64 version on one disk, the SPARC version on another, and the developer tools on the last. It is NOT OpenSolaris, it's Solaris, without the "Open". OpenSolaris is shipped as a free two-disk kit at http://get.opensolaris.org./index.html and includes three LiveCD versions.

Just got it yesterday (ordered in Mid of January). To all of you that haven't got it, patience my friends, patience... It will come someday.
I also got 3 DVD set.
Installation was a bit more difficult than linux or BSD.
My main problem is I cannot get it to connect to Internet. OS detected my wired LAN. During installation it only asked (or probably I wrongly selected an option) for my IP address & subnet mask.
After installed, I cannot find the place to set my gateway and DNS.
When first trying linux and BSD, I did not have this problem.
Secondly, my laptop sound (Realtek HD audio) was not detected.
Also FreeBSD failed to detect it wheras Linux works out of the box
After googling here and there, I finally was able to add user & log in as user instead of root. But as a user there is no option to shutdown nor reboot, just log out
Main problem is not having internet connection as I have to reboot to other OS to search for an answer
Solaris installed Gnome by default also there is no option where to install GRUB (It default to MBR).
Partition system is very much similar to BSD (slices inside one primary partition). Both Solaris and BSD can not detect my logical partition that contained Linux, linux swap, and data. They only saw it as one partition.........
Solaris desktop was quite similar to windows set-upwhich is probably good for newbies
