I've recently started using crossover office to use things like MS word/excel and powerpoint, and noticed it supports World of Warcraft as well. I'd liek to install this, I have the CD's and everything for it, but am unsure of the most efficient way to install it. Is crossover office better than Wine, or maybe Cedega?

I used the latest version of wine and found the installation to be very simple and the performance to be very good. Everything installed right from the cd's and it even patched without a problem. The only problem I have seen so far is that I cannot increase the multisampling over 1x and I have to use the onboard sound rather than the audigy card. Im still working on those issues though.

As far as perfomance, framrates outdoors seem to sit between 70 and 80 outdoors and 40-50 in Org. Im sure these numbers will go down once (if) I ever get the multisampling to increase.

The system that I am running on is:

AMD 64 4000+
nVidia 6800 GT 256mb vido
2g ram
SB audigy2 plat. (non-working atm)

I should also note that I use a very minimal ace2 ui since some people have noted that using a smaller ui seems to improve framerates with wine.

Sounds great, I'll give it a try as soon as I'm finished with my dist-upgrade.

i tried wine and cedega, wine is better. i couldn't even get cedega working.

go to winehq for the latest wine, or use the one in the repositories, they both work for me.

i needed to override a few dll files to install it.

i loosely followed this howto.

I have been using CrossOver Linux since Beta 2 was released several months ago, and I am now running the RC2 30 day trial. For every CrossOver Beta and RC release, I was able to install WoW out of the box, with the Windows CDs, without any problems. I had a few problems along the way that related to NVIDIA drivers, but other than that I've been having a blast playing WoW on Ubuntu.

As for in-game performance, WoW runs fine at 1280x1024 with everything maxed, most of the time. The only times I experience any lag is when I'm at a major city like Stormwind or if it rains (but that can be remedied by turning down weather intensity). There is also some slight lag when I'm in a battleground, but it's nothing major. My system specs are: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2.2 Ghz), 2 GB DDR400 memory, and an AGP 8x BFG GeForce 7800GS OC.

The game loads fine, the auto-updater works fine, in other words if you don't have the time to compile Wine, CrossOver is the way to go. Once my 30 day trial expires, I am definitely going to purchase CrossOver Standard. Oh and if you'd like to quest sometime, I'm a 38 Warlock on the Uldaman realm under the name Romar :)

is it installed on a windows box? if so transfer it to the ubuntu and use wine

its faster than installing and patching XD

and no errors too

Damn right, I second that <3

Though in my late times I fould Cedega work better with it than Wine... WoW just has a damn issue with changing between zones and the minimap that makes it crash... I *think* I have the AddOn somewhere if any of you experience problems when going inside a shop or something...
