I started using ubuntu a few months ago and if I remember right there were usually around 100 people on the forums but now there are around 1500 viewing!!?!

Has ubuntu really took off in the last few months or what?

I ditched windows completely for ubuntu and can understand why so many people are using it now but wow... that's a huge increase.

yeah i agree, ubuntuforums is very good place for the developers to get instant feedbacks and suggestions. it probably is the busiest forum in the linux and foss realm.

I remember that, I actually fixed GRUB so I could boot into windows, and the forums took FOREVER to load, so I yelled and cursed because Microsoft shouldn't sell software at such a high price if its this buggy, yelled and cursed more, kicked tower, yelled and cursed even more, said more bad things about Microsoft, but yeah, that was a great day for the forums!

I would have sued there and then for "denial of service"

Yeah, I noticed that.

I'd love to know how big the forum backups are. (they do have backups right?)

Backups! We don't need no stinkin' backups...

(Just kidding... I am sure one of the admins does a backup every night.)

That takes a night to create

A friend of mine set up a server where you could host free forums once, people started flooding in and in just a few days he had lots of subforums. His MySQL backup file grew to +100 mb of just text very rapidly!

I can't even begin to imagin how big these forums backups would be...

It'd probably have to be gigs in size, for all of the mass volume created.

Red Herring, a technology business magazine, interviewed Mark Shuttleworth about recent developments in the world of open source and his plans for Ubuntu.

A nice highlight from the interview is:

"Q: What about growth in adoption rates, any kind of numbers that you can give me?
A: We know now that there are probably at least 8 million [Ubuntu] users."
