I've posted this same question at other forums, but haven't gotten an answer yet. I tried to search here before starting a new forum thread, but no luck there either.

I have a MacBook with Intel processor. I can not seem to boot the Ubuntu 6.06 Live CD on this laptop. I can boot it fine on my G4 at home. Is there an incompatability with Intel based MacBooks and using the Live CD, or Ubuntu period? Does the 6.10 version address this problem? I've tried holding down Option or D keys at start up, but the DVD is never shown. In Mac OS X's Startup Disk, the DVD isn't shown as a bootable option. I'm also using Apple's BootCamp to run Windows XP Pro on this laptop, and again, the DVD isn't shown as a bootable option.

Any help with being able to do this would be greatly appreciated.

If it'll boot your G4 it's the Ubuntu CD for the PowerPC processor, which won't boot any computer with an Intel processor. For your MacBook you need the CD for the Intel processor -- the same CD I believe you would use for any x86 PC.

Beyond that, I've only begun to experiment with Ubuntu on a PowerPC Mac, so all I know is that there are some issues getting Ubuntu running on Intel Macs, but information about that can be found on other Ubuntu forums, such as "Absolute Beginner Talk" or "Hardware & Laptops". There are a good number of folks running Ubuntu on Intel Macs despite the difficulties; and those will probably be addressed in the next Ubuntu release, ca. April.

Apple's made such a smooth transition from PPC to Intel that a lot of folks simply don't realize how different the new Macs are inside from the old. Though the new Macs in many cases look identical to the previous PowerPC models, internally they're much more like PCs -- which is why you can run Windows XP (relatively) easily on your MacBook.

This forum is for people using Ubuntu on PowerPC Macs only; you won't find much if any help for using it on an Intel Mac here. Now that you have an Intel-based PC (even if it looks and acts like a Mac) you can play with the big kids in the other forums.

Wow, I never even thought of trying a x86 version DVD. Seems odd that it would work, but I'll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

The MacBook, like all of Apple's new machines, are powered by Intel processors. Apple does not make PowerPC-based machines anymore.
