Security Alerts for server

My apologies if this is obvious, but I've found no documentation on it. I'm
new to ubuntu, but not to unix in general.

I'm using Ubuntu server (6.06) so, of course, have no windowed environment.
I've read that on the desktop version, you can be notified of security updates
automatically - some sort of icon appears, I believe. Is there anything
comparable on the server edition? Perhaps an automated email or such?
I have subscribed to the security announcements mail list, so I won't be
completely in the dark about new updates.
