View Full Version : Very Poor Performance in WoW via Cedega.

Admittedly, I am a recent Linux Convert. I have Tried all sorts of various distros of Linux, From Debian to Mandriva based ones and I have decided to stick with Ubuntu.
That said, I am getting absolutely abysmal performance in WoW via Cedega. I tried using old engines and even with all settings turned down the game simply isn't playable.
On Windows, I get an average of 50-70 FPS in Orgrimmar during Primetime. On Ubuntu/Cedega, I get 15.
I HAD, keyword being HAD, the most recent installation of Nvidia Drivers. I am thinking that an older version of the drivers for Linux would make the game run smoother, as my roomate has no problems whatsoever.
Specs are as follows:
Core2Duo 2Ghz
2 GIG Ram
Geforce 7900GS Go

First question would be: Are you using the default open-source nv driver or have you installed the the nvidia-glx drivers?
I was using the Nvidia-GLX Drivers, Version 1.0-9746, I Just removed them to try and put in an older version.
Currently, I'm using the Open Source NV Driver.
Edit: Just tried to install 1.0-8776 as suggested by other Cedega users and It doesn't work at all for my machine. I'm reluctant to think it's a driver issue now.
Is it possible that my dual core isn't being utilized? How would I check this?
Edit: Not Dual Core.

Reinstalled 1.0-9746 because that at least worked. Still getting abysmal performance.

Your drivers aren't installed properly. As you can see in the GLX info, direct rendering is disabled.
What is the output of:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/version

No offense but as I mentioned in the thread I removed the drivers and reinstalled them. They are configured fine.
Output is
NVRM version: NVIDIA UNIX x86 Kernel Module 1.0-9746 Fri Dec 15 09:54:45 PST 2006
GCC version: gcc version 4.1.2 20060928 (prerelease) (Ubuntu 4.1.1-13ubuntu5)
GLXInfo returns DirectRendering=Yes. Drivers are fine.
It's not a driver installation problem. Here's the output of LSPCI:

I'm in the same boat. I get low FPS all around in WoW using Cedega; about 15 fps outdoors and 25-35 fps indoors (low settings) and in WinXP i was getting 50-60 fps all the time on max settings.
If anyone could help, that be great.

I have just tried following some of the tips in http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.com/wiki/World_of_Warcraft .
specifically, to add the SET gxApi "opengl" in the Config.wtf file, but when I do this and try to run the game, Cedega gives an error saying it failed to launch 3D Acceleration. The wiki mentions that Cedega doesn't support WoW's opengl by default, so i'm guessing that's the culprit for the low framerates--just need to figure out how to get Cedega to use it.

Why the hell don't you just run wow using wine and use the opengl flag? i have a gforce 6200 and WoW is nearly perfect without cedega... d3d support even with cedega is crap. And just curious are you running X in 24 bit colour? Because if you run it in 16 bit colour WoW crashes with that exact message.

If I don't figure it out, I'll definitely use wine. I know the wow config file sets the game to 24-bit color, but I'm not sure where in Ubuntu I find/set that for X.

ok, so i'm guessing where it says

means its at 24-bit color, which means it was not at 16-bit after all.

WoW runs very well under Wine for most Ubuntu users. If your interested in trying Wine you should look through this guide: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WorldofWarcraft
Also Wine is better documented, and more people are willing and able to help you if you encounter problems when running WoW under Wine.
Anyway, I am by no means an expert, but your xorg.conf looks fine to me.

I followed the instructions in that link and got wow up and running with wine in short time. Performance is on par with how I remembered it in WinXP, though FPS tanks in crowded areas (a lot), but is still ok. Just having a problem getting sound to work now. I opened the winecfg and selected the OSS option plus the lines in the config.wtf file but still no sound.

i suggest trying wine, i was happily playing wow under WINE, when i heard it was faster on cedega. turns out wouldn't even run in cedega.

Did you try ALSA? OSS is a bit outdated...

Clearly you haven't tried running WoW under Wine. ALSA doesn't work.

Ahhh. Okay nevermind. But IIRC newer cards aren't supported under OSS anymore - that's why the OSS drivers are being phased out of the kernel. Might that be the problem?

Ok, not sure what I was doing wrong, but I got sound now with OSS, but, as the article says, can't have any other programs use sound, so I did the sudo apt-get install alsa-oss . When I run wow with that though, the sound is crackling a lot, like the sampling rate is too low.
