What is this tar? Does it contain a customized installation of java6 for ubuntu? (e.g. sets up /etc/jvm, alternatives, etc)

it contains debs for java6. you will have to execute "update-alternatives --config java" afterwards to make java6 default.

What a bad service!

I downloaded the 60 Mb and suddenly the file changed into an 17 Kb HTML file... full of "escort" publicity and asking me for a pasword... What was that?

I recommend: Install JDK6, eclipse and Tomcat (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=332674)

I moved several posts out of this thread into the jail. Disagreeing is okay, but the way in which you disagree needs to be polite and respectful. Even if your views are diametrically opposed you can state them without resorting to personal attacks. Please keep this in mind in the future.
