I am in need of good games (preferably 3D and in Ubuntu6.10 repo, and maybe racing games... and no not Tux.)

Basically I am building a computer for a elder relative who wants to do casual web/email/office and a little gaming... without tell them that I am putting something other than Windows on it!!!

You could give a look at www.happypenguin.org, it's a portal for Linux games, both free and commercial, with reviews, rating, and obviously they're sorted by category.

Good luck!

By the way, I know it's not a racing game, but I really suggest you to try out The Battle for Wesnoth (http://www.wesnoth.org), it's a masterpiece of GPL games. Worth trying!

I love to see it but their site is down so I can't even get any screenshot of it?

I love to see it but their site is down so I can't even get any screenshot of it?Hmm...it sure is. Give it an hour or even a day and see if it comes back up I guess...or you could just install it and play around for a bit if you like. It's in the Ubuntu repos.

Battle for Wesnoth. I have a Windows partition full of cool games like Halo, CS, Half-Life 2, etc. and I play Wesnoth over them! Frozen Bubble is also good.

It's in the Ubuntu repos.

Seriously.

Just look in the games section of 'add/remove' and you'll find so many. It's fun to experiment with them.

Happypenguin.org has a list of Linux games sorted by average user rating here (http://www.happypenguin.org/list?sort=avg_rating). I would start at the highest rated and cast your eye down the list from there to see what tickles your fancy.

Armagetron Advanced, Wolfenstein ET, Neverwinter Nights, Serious Sam, Battle for Wesnoth, TORCS, VICE, Foobillard, Glest, Cube/Sauerbraten, Nexuiz, Tremulous, Alien Arena (which makes me laugh), Vendetta Online, FreeCiv, LinCity-NG ...

Not all of those are 3D, not all are in the repos, and not all are racing games ... but they're the ones I keep coming back to.

Thanks guys, I have installed some apps from the repo, tried them out, I think my friend is going to like them!!

However, none of the 3D racing game really worked. I tried Torc, Vdrift, and Trigger - even when I change the settings to the lowest possible, it is still lagging so much that it is unplayable. I have installed nVidia (non-beta) driver with 3D Direct enabled.

Also, LXDoom did not work, it said that it is missing something when I try to run it from the cli.
