Wood, marble, and PORCELAIN!! Obviously not the same thing.

Funny how beryl/xgl/aiglx is way ahead of vista in the 3d desktop department

is there a google video or youtube version ?

flash stuff on that site never works for me :(

EDIT :: i try again and it starts working...odd

hmmm, even more odd.....the description next to the video Nicholas D. Kristof reports on sexual slavery in Cambodia.

somehow i think the link is broken......

(i'm so confused)

hmm, found it....funny stuff :D

though it changed to another video before i could copy the address, maybe that's why the one you linked to didn't work.... odd :D

here it is http://video.on.nytimes.com/ifr_main.jsp?nsid=a718aabc2:10f98f2de38:5885&fr_story=d14603c1e23e6ce37920a8134a2e27b1405a4991&st=1166505627783&mp=FLV&cpf=false&fvn=9&fr=121506_073946_718aabc2x10f8618ff49xw6950&rdm=435505.4553255987

I really don't get the whole "Vista is a rip-off of OSX" thing. Sure, it all works in a pretty similar way but the fact is these are all modern conventions that have cropped up.
People want these things now! If Microsoft didn't include them, people would be on about how "Mac OS has a dashboard, Vista doesn't!"; they have to do it. It would have been smarter of them to maybe come up with something new, but I don't think there's really a huge amount more that can be done there besides virtual folders.

Besides that, Vista's sidebar is far more useful than Mac OS's. Vista applies the idea of Desklets, where the little applets are imediately there upon starting up. On the other hand, OSX's thing involves the Dashboard which is a whole mouse click away and does not feel at all integrated with the desktop.

Anyhow, what do I care? Ubuntu does all this and better :)
We have panel applets, desktop applets, virtual desktops, a fantastic window manager (with lots of power-user features that anyone can appreciate), and live search! (Superior live search, at that).

I don't quite understand it, either. I'm not exactly leaping to MS's defense, but I can't see many similarities between Aero and Aqua. Take the caption buttons, for instance. I find the extended rectangle top-right Aero buttons much more reminiscent of the Clearlooks and Ubuntu Human themes in GNOME than of the, er, top-left circle caption buttons of Aqua.

I don't exactly see much similarity between the general UI of Aqua and that of Aero (the 'glass' effects aren't exactly a rip-off). But who am I to tell? I don't use Macs.

A terrific video, nonetheless. I just hope this gets put on Google Video soon (had to launch IE to watch it - FF just gave me... black).

Nice. That guy pretty much proved that M$ stole Vista from Mac OSX and took away some features.

[edit] Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRtg2avOE1I&NR) is a similar video I found on how MS developed Vista. :p

David Pogue is a huuuge apple fanboy. Remember how NYT and other papers went into a tizzy after the video ipod was released? Those tech journos idolize Steve jobs like anything.

People should do some research and check out some screencaps and reviews of the early Longhorn/Vista builds. I think you guys will be surprised to learn that many of the so called 'stolen' or 'copied' features were present and functional in early Longhorn/Vista builds before they were ever announced in OS X. Index based searching, a sidebar with widgets, smart folders, etc were all present in Longhorn/Vista builds as early as '02. I understand their long development cycle allowed Apple to beat them to market, and Apple deserves credit for bringing these features to market first, but saying MS copied the features is patently false considering they were present in alpha/beta builds of the OS well before they were ever even announced for OS X.

The indexing feature is present in Win XP itself. try performing a search and after the results are displayed, a dialog box shows up informing about the indexing feature. Just turn it on and future searches wil show up faster. Btw, I find X1's destop seach app to be the best in market (it's free for personal use)

All these debates on OS copying each other are useless, we all know all OSes copy each other all the time.
