This is a weird problem that I have never been able to figure out.
First I started with the ubuntu amd64 distro and installed kde via apt-get. Installed the ati drivers, it worked great. The weird problem was that when I ran tuxracer from the command line as a user, tux would veer to the left the entire time. However, if I would run it as root, I did not have this problem. Now I have recently switched to the x86 distro, and I have the EXACT same problem. I searched the forums and I did not find anyone else with this issue (if I missed them I apologize). Would I be correct that this is most likely an issue with the interaction with my hardware? Funny thing is, I used to run Fedora Core 3 and I did not have this issue. Any ideas as to why tux likes to go left unless he is root?

Did you ever get to the bottom of this problem? It's just started happening here...

a shot in the dark, do you have a joystick/pad plugged in?
UT2004 controls go mental if i forget to unplug the joypad.
