Why can't they just add this feature in?
Many people use something like photoshop JUST to remove red-eye, it should be a basic level function, not a tutorial

it's easier to use f-spot - that's already got the red-eye reduction built in

There is a red-eye removal plug-in for Gimp. You can get it here. (http://registry.gimp.org/plugin?id=4212)
Why can't they just add this feature in?
