We're still well ahead overall.
I'm guessing a major factor for the increase is the Novell deal which has got a lot of people clicking.

i'd have to say that SUSE is a strong distro, very easy to use. it was a great distro before the scandal/controversy, and all the media coverage that its been getting lately can only have increased people's curiosity. after all, "no press is bad press".

And it's not hard to slant Distrowatch's numbers one way or another. If everyone who visited the cafe clicked through Distrowatch to the Ubuntu page ... well, you can see what would happen.
We should all click on the Fluxbuntu link, and send Distrowatch into a tailspin.

Distrowatch is highly sensible to new release.

Isn't or wasn't there some, now extremely restricted if it still exists, forum at Gamespot whose members used to flood other forums and blogs for fun, eventually resulting in the site being sued? Or is this just coming completely out of my ****? :-k

I guess it's mainly because the openSUSE 10.2 just got released few days ago...

im glad
it would be a terrible thing if the ubuntu devs got complacent.competition is a good thing people :) and so is the desire to be the best.

I don't recall Gamespot in particular, but it seems anybody who makes a poll determined by anonymous click-throughs (which is what I understand the Distrowatch rankings to be) is just begging to be click-bombed ... or whatever we call it. Distrowatchbombed.

Distrowatch just shows a trend, so it's better to trust its last 12 months' (or 6, whatever) quantity. The bad point about it is that even this long time measurements say that Suse is getting near. Maybe someone is taking advantage on Distrowatch system to get Suse on top?

Obsessing about Distrowatch == Waste of Time.

Well said. I don't think Distrowatch provides a reliable popularity solution. Downloads would be more accountable.

Well, I've just given OpenSUSE 10.2 (GNOME) a good trial, and I must say it's very, very good. In some ways better than Edgy, in some ways not as good, but IMO it deserves to be breathing down Ubuntu's neck.
With the innovations Novell have put into it such as the integrated SLAB menu and Beagle as well as it's general professional polish it's a serious competitor to Ubuntu as the top desktop distro IMO. XGL / Compiz basically works at the press of a button right after you install your video drivers (which itself is very easy) and setting up Beryl and / or AIGLX instead is very easy too. Slightly easier than in Ubuntu.
I'd say that in general it would be easier for a new user to set up than Ubuntu if it wasn't for the existence of Automatix / EasyUbuntu. Even then it's arguable. YAST2 is still somewhat annoying compared to APT though (tends to be slower) and of course SUSE doesn't have Ubuntu's great community.
It's pretty clear to me that Novell are putting serious effort into SUSE as a real desktop replacement for XP or Vista. Pity about the recent Microsoft kerfuffle but I'm not one to let that sway my judgement of the quality of SUSE itself.

OpenSuSE is a fantastic distro, and one of the only ones that touches Ubuntu in 64 bit stability. 64 bit stability was the only reason I really stuck with Ubuntu. And, also I guess I really prefer APT over RPM by a lot.
I want to try out Fedora Core on my 2nd disk. It looks really nice.

I thought I read on Novell's webpage that Open Suse was not eligible for any updates other than security updates if it was not registered. Is that true?
