Hey, I'm a HUGE fan of Ubuntu, and that's all I run on my workstations and my wife's workstation, but what's going on over at distrowatch.org where Ubuntu is slipping bigtime to OpenSuse (of all things! (http://www.linuxjournal.com/node/1000121)) in the download polls?
:-k
If it's something that Ubuntu did, or is about to do, then perhaps it needs to say, "Wait a minute," and rethink that avenue.
I think a podcast should cover this topic.

Distrowatch is not an accurate source for popularity of linux. It doesn't even watch downloads; instead it logs how many people have gone through them to reach the linux version. Too many factors are at play here, so don't worry too much. In the end, just think about the thriving linux population and be glad...

Probably, it's just because opensuse 10.2 has just been released, and is generating a lot of buzz. Don't worry, when feisty is released, ubuntu will skyrocket on distrowatch.

like others have stated it honestly doesn't mean much or anything and is for entertainment purposes only;)

It's because of the 10.2 release. That's all.

SuSE is a very good distro esspecially with the 10.2
I personally think all the problems with edgy have contributed to this tumble, Maybe if the devs get it right with feisty , then ubuntu will sit on the top of the mountain again.
I dont take much notice of popularity charts anyway, Usually a good nose around the distros forum will tell you if its any good.

Yesterday I would have argued against your statement about Edgy, but after today's 2.6.17-1.34 kernel updates causing me and many others to get a black screen of death after rebooting, I will keep quiet. I have heard some argue that this is the users fault or nvidia's fault or whatever. I say, you never get this in Windows and people use standard and beta drivers all the time. Nothing like a black screen and a cursor to send any newbie running back to MS. The devs need to spend more time testing their releases. Oh, and one last point. This is not the first time it has happened.

I'd have to disagree. How many times has MS broken one of my servers or workstations due to a bad patch? I lost count.

Everything is a plot from MS to make people think SUSE is the best one :), maybe they got their employees clicking links in distrowatch

Open Suse and Ubuntu have been neck to neck for over a year now. So as some one comes with a better mouse trap. That will go up the ranks. Crips PClinuxOS has been creeping up the ladder. Ubie fell down with Eft and sent it out with with bugs that urk alot of people. Fedora did the same with the push of FC4. It is a lesson learned. Do not release some thing full of bugs. Any ways, will Ubie stay #1? Who knows? As long Debian can keep their time line, with GNOME, KDE, and other open source that Ubie up and running. Suse use to be based on SLAX and now has step off that one a while ago. I use Suse on a other box and like that one too. OK my soap box

Maybe that's due to newbies needing to google more than more experienced users?

Edit:
And if you look at this one http://www.google.com/trends?q=ubuntu%2C+windows+xp&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all you'll see that ubuntu is definitely catching up! :D

I tried the 10.2 release of OpenSuSE.
Believe me, it's nothing to write home
about. For me, on my notebook, it was
nothing but bloatware. And Yast seems
to be getting worse and worse. I'll stick
with Ubuntu thanks.

Aye, I've been checking out OpenSuse 10.2 as a 4th option on my rig and am not overly impressed enough to keep it, so I'm going to nuke it and check out something else.
But does it really matter if Ubuntu is #1? Is it a competition?
