I've been considering getting an (offbrand) Xbox 360 controller to play PC games and emulators, but I've heard bad things about Linux and gamepads. The Madcatz 360 controls have a fairly nice D-pad and are comfy in my hand, so it's really tempting. I know there is a driver for it in Windows (obviously), but I'm wondering how well it will work in Ubuntu. Anybody tried one?

I tried a joytech xbox360 control with ubuntu edgy and didn't work. The xbox game pad drivers(module) is really out dated that ships with the current linux kernel. There is a newer version of found here http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Xbox_360_controller_on_Linux
Unfortunately it didn't work for me.
It is to bad since I think the best PC game pads right now are the Xbox 360 ones.

I agree I am hoping to try and get it to work with the new kernel (2.6.19 and above). This is where I am at so far: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=321412 Which is not too far yet. :)

I'm using a Philips PC Controller GGE909 usb ($13 usd) I got from wal-mart and it works great. All buttons work just pluged it in all I had to do is configure the buttons with the emulator I was using.
They seem to be outa stock at wal-mart

But I do remember seeing they were out stock online but were avalible in store. I don't see any other place that has them avalible but if you have a wally world close I would check to see if they have any. The only thing that doesnt work is the vibration but thats kinda anoying anyway.
I've seen alot of posts about the xbox controlers and using them in Linux and am just wondering are there so few controlers out there (that work under Linux) ? or is it a wireless feature everyone is going for?

It's a controller that doesn't suck *** that everyone is going for. Also, if you already have an Xbox/Xbox 360, why buy another controller if you don't need to?

In case anyone else is looking for a great linux gamepad on a budget, the Philips works great. USB works perfectly with 7.04 out of the box; nestopia, mupen64, mame, etc work. USB cable retracts into the controller when not in use @ ~4 feet.
Mine was $14.99 local. but print out the website and pricematch in store for $11.98. They had plenty when I was there.
Update: Games that need button to be held down (like a slapshot in NHL on gens), you really need add extra force for the buttons. Still can't complain for ~$10 and no calibrating.
