Hi Alll
I am a new comer to Linux having tried Slackware and Vector. I had become disillusioned by Linux as I found it difficult to understand how it fitted together and almost impossible to get packages to install and run so that I could have a replacement for my MS powered system. I then came across Ubuntu almost by accident and have not looked back. I have found that the packages from Universe install and run easily. The whole OS is easily customised. Everything runs a little slowly but as it is running on a Dell Inspiron 3000 which is only a 200Mhz processor with 148Mb RAM I am a happy person. It is a workstation on our company network and has networked as easily (if not more easily) than its Windows 2000 companions. I have been able to get to server shares and printers without difficulty and have been having more fun with a computer since I got my first 286 machine. Thanks to you all. :-P

I know how you feel, I've been looking at linux distros since 95, and never made the jump. Since ubuntu came out, I haven't looked back.

Your mistake was STARTING with something like Slackware. Don't get me wrong, I like Slack, but it's not the distro to start on. Trust me, I know. It was the distro I started on ;)

Welcome.

With specs like yours I must ask- have you tried XFCE?

welcome aboard. if you're using Gnome at the moment you'll definitely get a good speed boost by switching to a lighter window manager like Xfce (http://www.xfce.org/) or fluxbox (http://fluxbox.sourceforge.net/).
