Hi there,
eyes still a little red from a long night in front of this open source settler clone named widelands...
However, I don't seem to be able to produce blackwood. Anybody out there know what I have to do?
Cheers

I wonder how to train new soldiers. I keep on running out after expanding camp.

Greetings to the Philippines,
you got a point there - I don't know either, mined gold and all the rest of it, built everything military there is to build (well, perhaps not everything) but my training camps don't get full!
My temporary solution is to start off building small strongholds and then, once I've got the whole infrastructure going, replace up to 4 of these with a fortress. This saves on soldiers no end (I only keep 1 soldier in a fortress at a time).
Let me know if you find out anything else.
Cheers
Ingo

I think in the orginal game you needed beer, weapons and armour to get soldiers. dunno.

I believe you need plus a complete set of mines (coal, gold, iron and granit). I recall all the helmet and weapons icons are blotted out in the Trainingscamp. They might be filled up once you make the rest of the structures, like the helmsmith and axe factory building (which need iron ore and gold, and more). Long process though. So soldiers might be produced when all the buildings are put up.

Greetings to the capital of beer Ingo,
Just a tip, if you got mines, don't forget to keep taverns (ration), inns (snack)and big inns (meals) churning out food for the mines, or production will stop.
I think all three incarnations of the metalsworks are needed, including axe factory and war mill, to produce different implements. When implements are introduced, I believe the men will multiply in the Headquarters. I hope.

Yeah,
did all that, but I wasn't churning out enough iron ore for the metalworks. I had plenty of helmets, but axes! I think you're on the right track, though.

Guess you need two iron mines or so, or need to upgrade them. But when you upgrade a mine to Deep mine, it needs to be fed snacks, which needs an upgrade of the Tavern to Inn. When the mine becomes deeper, meals are needed, which required upgrading Inn to Big Inn. Ah, that means a lot of farms, fishers, bakeries, wells and taverns then before upgrading the Metalworks and Axe Factories. You'll really need a lot of buildings here! A total resource management game. Oh well, let's play on and find out more. I suppose this game is still under development.

Now a little glitch... I just upgraded to the 2.6.15-28 kernel, and Widelands crashes (exits abruptly) when I play the 2nd mission on this kernel.
ADDITION: OK, it crashed also in my 2.6.15-27 kernel, and when the Stonegrinder finishes construction and the new dialogue box comes up with the villages elder speaking. So I just start a new game, and it runs OK after. Only after rebooting, then picking up again on the 2nd mission game, when the quarry finishes at the north rocks, it crashes. So it crashes when the 'old man' dialogue comes up, and I guess it's from some bug or fluky dependency.

I'm using build9half. Seems to be the latest version...
EDIT: That's build9half-3ubuntu1, to be precise. On Dapper, I doubt I could go higher if I could not upgrade the libc6... no wonder the warning is, "if you don't use the right version for your kernel, you could have dependency problems..."

Hello,
I have a problem with first tutorial mission  I don't have another little red house icon to build another quarry. I can only build one, and all new building sites i get are on the north :(

you can try placing your houses better... OR you can use woodcutters to cut down wood to clear land for buildings... be sure to turn off your forester/planter so no new trees are planted
