Hi all!. I am thinking seriously about investing in a Macbook/pro but I have not a clue which one is best, money wise and performance wise. I certainly do NOT want to be throwing money away, especially for the sake of *colour*!!.
Just wanted some advice from the pro's, as I am not one - I am on a budget of £1000 uk.

It just depends on you really and what you want? I think they're all great pieces of hardware. Personally, i'd go for the cheaper one and just add more ram and perhaps a SuperDrive.

If you want a reasonable price, get the white MacBook. It has the best power/price ratio, I think.
Take the 2GHz one with SuperDrive and buy additional 2 GB of RAM by yourself (not order them with your MacBook, you will waste money this way).
You will end up at around 1250-1300 pounds.

If you're after a Macbook (not pro) I'd go for the middle priced one (white) with the DVD-RW drive.
I can't really comment on how well Ubuntu supports dual booting on Macs but from what I understand Parallels should run it fine under OSX.

You fail. MacBook pro at 1000 pounds is pure utopia.

With Parallels for Mac software, you will be able to run Ubuntu 6.10 - I have it working perfectly in Parallels on my Mac Pro. Works like a charm too! :)

The best MacBook is any laptop made by ASUS. They are the ones who make them for Apple, they play well with Linux, and you don't pay up the **** for one.

I take back the comment I made a couple of weeks ago about the mid range MacBook... it is actually very nice, hence I am getting that one, after all. I had not realised the screen still retained the 1280x800 res.

Why? I don't see how this is a discussion on Mac OS X. It's a thread where somebody is asking for advice on which Macbook to get.
This thread should be moved back.

I am neither really - more like a jack of all trades. My main interest is computers, but I cannot personally justify the £1349 price tag of the 15.4" MacBook Pro. My friend has just bought one for Final Cut work - he is a film editor and publisher, so that it much more suited to what type of work he is doing.
Please feel free to take a look at his site by the way - his name is Peter Whitehead - he used to go on tour, and film with the Rolling Stones, and conceived many ideas for the way in which the 'pop video' could be filmed. He is a very interesting guy, and also shared a house with/made pop videos for Pink Floyd:

Personally, I have decided to pluck for the £879 MacBook in white - this machine satisfies all my needs, since now I have seen Peter's MacBook Pro in the 'flesh' so to speak, it is a little extravagant *and* heavy for my liking. MacBook is *perrrrrrfection!!*

Good Call! I just made the switch from a Toshiba M45-S331 with a 15.4" screen a few months ago. It took a few days to get used to the smaller screen, but I really love the portability of this laptop. Since I take it to school with me every day, it makes a big difference in the backpack.
With Exposè and Hot Corners enabled, multitasking is even easier on this smaller screen than on my 15.4" Toshiba. Granted, I could get this functionality with Ubuntu, but I love the integration of OS X.
I am happy to see the route Ubuntu is headed down though. :)
My Macbook:
13" White Macbook with SuperDrive
1Gig RAM (will be upgrading when I have the money)
80Gig HDD
