Well, I've been playing WoW for a really long time now, I play a 60 rogue, and if any of you have ever played WoW, you know very well that there are enough 60 rogues to go around, thus it's damned near impossible for me to get anything done in endgame. So, I'm looking for a new paid or free MMORPG that runs on ubuntu. If any of you have any suggestions, I'm more than happy to hear them.

Let me clarify quickly, It doesn't need to be native linux, it can be windows based as well, just as long as it's known to run with emulation, that's fine.

Well there's GW via Cedega.
CCP Games are working with a Linux client for EVE-online (space MMOP)

Have you checked the list? http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/MMORPG_Games

Yeah, I checked out the list, nothing that really snagged my interest. As for guild wars, played it for awhile, didn't like it all that much, went back to WoW.

Now, as for EVE, I've had my eye on it for awhile, I hear good things, and hearing that there's a linux client in the works is quite encouraging. Can it be run via WINE or Cadega as a windows program until the linux version is released?

I know that the Cedega people are working close with the EVE-Online people so it works there.
For wine you might check this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=293533

www.mmorpg.com is a good site to use for looking up MMORPGs. I would say Dark Age of Camelot but sadly it does not run on Linux.

I tried Eve.. boring to me. It's a big pvp chat arena for people who like to mine asteroids. Kind of not-so-fun for me.

I also play GW, but can't get it to run using Wine or Cedega and have to resort to dual booting. It's a fun game...definitely not WoW, it's different but it can be fun.

That's why I went with Guild Wars, considering you don't have to pay a monthly fee. I played Ultima Online for a long time, but everyone I played with had stopped and wanted something more 'graphical'. I figure as long as the game is fun, who cares? I also refuse to play WoW because Blizzard aren't exactly friendly towards Open Source operating systems.

Plus I don't have a lot of time to spend on MMORPGs, so with Guild Wars, I can just play it whenever I feel like it.

Though Eve Online or Vendetta Online, or even maybe Anarchy Online would be pretty cool to get into.

I did beta test Auto Assault and it was quite fun, though I really don't have the time or money at the moment to get that game, I'm not sure if it works with Wine or Cedega either.

I played Eve for a while and thought it was the best MMORPG ever. From the perspective of Role Playing it offers much more freedom than any other game I have played.

After playing WOW for a while I used to wish I could attack other faction members and talk to opposing faction members. This seemed like a serious limitation to me.

However in Eve you can attack who you want to. This is tempered by the fact that policed areas will send their ships to attack you. Also in Eve character death actually means something. If you die you lose all the possessions you had with you and any skill points you have earned since you last bought a clone. In WOW death just meant a walk from the nearest graveyard...yawn.

I still don't get how everyone gets GW working with Cedega...I've tried everything and can't get it to work - very very low speed, most times 1-2 fps.

You just need to get into a decent player corporation and join in the PvP fun!

EVE, IMO, is a great game. I don't know about a Linux client being in the works (and I'm not hopeful, its a hell of a lot of work, especially for a small dev like CCP. Better if they pump resources into improving the game, like they are doing), but I have heard (not yet tested) that it works with Wine. I will be testing this soon, but I do not have any game time at the moment (ran out a couple of days ago, and trying to organise a time code. AAARRRGG!).

They are actually building a linux client.

Do you have a link?

Last time I was reading about them working with transgaming (cedega), when transgaming was asked about this, they denied it...

Although a Linux client would be great, if EVE works through Wine, I'm happy for them to not make one. I have not tested it yet, still copying the client to my laptop (where Ubuntu is).

Thanks. I look forward to seeing this in action when its done.. It will save a lot of trouble with Wine (which, incidentally, I am experiencing now)

I have a 60 rogue as well, but quit a couple of months ago. It was so good, I wasted lots of time on the game.

City of Heroes gets my vote. runs very well with cedega. It's very different to WoW, a lot more focused and streamlined, and combat orientated, but it sure is fun! I play WoW as well, and I find that city of heroes' pick-up-and-play type gameplay is a perfect contrast to WoW's much more open-endedness.

Anarchy Online is also fantastic, and runs very well in both wine and cedega! Recently they made the original game (but not it's expansion packs, including the superior Shadowlands) free to download and play! Here's the link: http://www.anarchy-online.com/free/ad_campaigns/freecampaign

I agree with the poster above, while Anarchy Online had a miserable launch, Funcom really turned the game around. The game is huge, there is a ton of content and it's very original. If you enjoy a sci-fi themed game, I highly recommend it. The only thing I've noticed though is if you choose to only play the free original game, you will miss out on a lot of the other players. Most hardcore AO players hang out in the new expansion areas.

Also, LOTRO is a great game (although sadly it cannot be run under Linux just yet) and I highly recommend it if you enjoy Tolkien and fantasy games and are already dual-booting. It is somewhat of a WoW clone in terms of client functionality, however, overall it has a lot of great original elements and the gameplay is a blast.

If you're tired of your 60 rogue, why not make another character? Nothing is forcing you to stick with just one.

What about City of Heroes / Villains? I played it on Windows a little while back...fun game.
