This may not be the most crucial technical advice, but it bugged me for weeks. The ESPN.com (http://espn.com) homepage has a section called ESPNNEWS Headlines, with a list of its RSS headlines. In Firefox on XP, each item appears on a single page, but in Ubuntu most of the items take up two lines. This may only be a problem on my monitor at 1024x768, but that is the most common non-LCD resolution.

The fix is to change the default Sans-serif font in Firefox. Go to Edit -> Preferences, click on the General tab and then click on Fonts & Colors. Under Sans-Serif, I changed mine to FreeSans, but others may work as well.
