apt-cache question

Is there a way to limit apt-cache (the search function specifically) to *installed* packages (or an equivelent command for apt-get/dpkg)? I'm doing this over ssh so synaptic is not a possibility.

When I do that (apt-cache search --installed mozilla-thunderbird), it spits out a bunch of packages, most of which *aren't* installed. Am I doing something wrong?

The man page also says that --installed only applies to depends and rdepends. You might want to try:

% aptitude search ~imozilla

the ~i says to just look at the installed stuff. aptitude has lots of other search patterns, too. install aptitude-doc-en and check out:

I did forget the 'search' argument, which I've corrected in my first post.

For dpkg, I would use dpkg -l "*thunder*", so you avoid 'clipping' problems. For instance, searching for firefox:


# dpkg -l "*firefox*"

Actually, I guess you really want dpkg --get-selections "*mozilla*" to avoid getting listing stuff you may have had installed at one point:

I also prefer aptitude, because if I want to search from the available packages, the command is almost the same:
