Hi I've been using Dosbox for about 6months. I been running it on a 800mhz 192mb Memory in Ubuntu 6.06. I want to run more protected mode dos games however I'm limited because my computer simply can't take the load. I want to run every dos game ever made in dosbox. So what system should i be looking to upgrade or buy. Whould a (2ghz 512mb) system be good enough or should i dream about getting a (80core 10teraflops with 2Terabytes of memory).;)
Just Jokeing!!

I would think that 800mhz should be plenty power to run Descent.
To me, it would seem a waste of money to upgrade your computer only to run DOS games. There must be a better way.
Maybe there is something you can tweak to improve efficiency. I have never tried dosbox so I can't say much about that.
Do you have proper video drivers installed in Ubuntu?
Have you tried other emulators like bochs (http://bochs.sourceforge.net/)?
Have you considered setting up a virtual machine running DOS in VMware or similar? Maybe there is something that can handle it better than DOSbox.
And of course, you could always try running DOS natively by giving it it's own partition, and selecting DOS from the GRUB boot menu. ;)

I'd go with either a vmware or a dual boot because I cannont fathom paying to upgrade a machine in hopes to play games that were written for computers ~100mhz
maybe I missed something here-- probably did.

AS I understand I, dosemu should give you a slight speed boost over doxbox, I think there was a HOWTO for it under dapper awhile back.

Thanks Peesalot, I figured my video driver wasn't working right. So i installed the nvidia-glx-driver and it worked. Really worked!!! My system is at least twice as fast. And i'm able to play Deacent at native Speed. Which is awsome!!
Plus AI i will download the Deacent ports 1 and 2.
Thanks for the help.
