View Full Version : Does Ubuntu GNOME 2.10 remind you of OS X (mac)?

Alot of people have mentioned how GNOME 2.10 under Ubuntu is a very un-Windows-looking dkestop environment, and that KDE is more reminiscent of Windows. GNOME 2.10 is more akin to an OS X desktop.
It looks to me that GNOME 2.10 has indeed borrowed some ideas from OS X, which is a good thing, IMHO.
Anyone else notice any similarities?

Actually, it's funny you should mention that. The week before Hoary came out, I went out and bought a Mac Mini. I HAD to -- I'm working on an independent film, and we're going to miss our deadline unless I start helping out with the special effects. So, I needed a machine that could run Adobe AfterEffects -- no Linux version available.
And I thought, "Ooooh. Mac OS X really IS pretty! Eye candy! Yay!"
And then Hoary came out. I thought, Hm, a lot of buzz about Ubuntu, I'll install it on my old laptop and see what the fuss is about.
And I thought, "Ooooh. Ubuntu really IS pretty! Eye candy! Yay!"
I was actually planning to write up a detailed comparison of OS X vs Ubuntu. For now I'll just say:
Mac Mini + Adobe After Effects = $599 + $1000 = $1599.
FIVE YEAR OLD LAPTOP + Ubuntu = $300 + $0 = $300.
And with Ubuntu, you get an office suite and a photo manipulation package. (I got the GIMP working on OS X, but it's ugly version 1 of the GIMP, yuck. I also installed NeoOffice, but it wouldn't run the macros in my OO screenwriting template. *sigh*)
If there were a decent open source motion effects package, I could have saved a ton of money. So could a lot of other independent filmmakers.
Guess what my next project is after I've finished the movie. :)

Have a look around www.gnomefiles.com, and if you don't mind using KDE through GNOME, then check out www.kde-apps.org.
Wasn't Shrek or Shrek2 (movie) made with Linux? I heard that somewhere . . .

Not really. GNOME 2.10, especially on Ubuntu, is very clean and quiet. I wouldn't describe OS X as clean; it's a rather candy-coated UI.

I THINK you're right, but I think it was made with Maya, which is NOT an open source app (cheapest possible license is a student license-- 300 bucks).

I think it is a very clean OS....KDE has much too many buttons and tabs. GNOME is a fresh look.
I think people compare it to OSX becuase it just so much more graphically appealing than windows..who knows.
Anyway, first post here. Have used other distros before but this Ubuntu is slick!

Welcome, Bubb! and Yea, I much prefer the clean Gnome look to KDE. I also run OS X 10.3.9 on a MINI and love it. I keep it pretty clean on the desktop too.
