I am a board member for a non-profit that is running Ubuntu 5.4 on their server. Apparently, there is no record for the user name/password of the server. This is a problem in general but particularly now, that the organization is moving. Is there a way to bypass the login screen to bring down the server?

Hope this question isn't too naiive.
Thanks for any suggestions.

If you have 1 user who has an account on this system, you can make a good deal of progress. If not, I think I would recommend loading up a Ubuntu Live CD, and mounting the disks that way. You can then copy the data on the hard drive(s) to other locations for access, although you'll still need to break your way in... It is possible.
