I haven't thought of a good reason that I need this yet, but I still think it is cool as hell.

Tried something similar a few days ago, with Nokia N80, and the same thing, as great an idea as it seemed at the time, once done, I sat staring at it thinking, right, now what!?

Now if only I could figure out how to use it as a skype handset over bluetooth.

Tried that too....over wifi!

...and besides, ssh from phone to computer doesn't make you a geek. Doing it and successfully logging in without disabling predictive input however...!!!

That's right up there with them installing NetBSD on a toaster (http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=25321)... wow.

Or the RiscPC Rocketship (http://www.worldofwibble.com/aboutriscpc.html).

*lol* Did you use bluetooth or usb?

I have an Motorola A780 and managed to set up an PPP connection over bluetooth between my Ubuntu box and my phone. I wanted to do that to be able to sync my phone with my calendar app (doesn't work yet) and share my DSL connection with my phone (doesn't work yet) :).

I do not know that much about SSH, but what would happen if you typed in startx from your mobile phone?

oh well, you'd start an X session on the machine you've ssh'ed into of course, don't expect anything fancy to happen on the celly ;)

Oh, but what if you "ssh -X"'d into it? ;)

The machine (what ever it is, be it a phone or a toaster) would have to be running an x server using the x server protocal for ssh -X to work.

I love using it though so I can check my kontacts from work and update things using the gui.

Using a smart phone with linux and qt/xorg should work, but the xwindows protocals have to be the same and I can't remember if they are for mobile to pc.

Neither. I connected over the net. I can do it from anywhere that I have phone service.

Well, I suppose I could VNC (http://www.freeutils.net/vnc2go/index.jsp) to it, but I figured that would be overkill. :-D

Old news. The Zaurus Collie came out in 2002, if I'm not mistaken - that is a full-fledged Linux PDA, and you can turn it into a cell phone by putting in a CF GSM radio card.
I ssh to/from mine regularly. Starting X apps remotely works, too - both ways :D And my wife just got a Zaurus Akita :) If anyone is interested, I'll post pics.

You don't need a good reason; the fact that it can be done is reason enough! :KS

I've been doing it for years. I also have Python installed on my phone, with handy packet manipulation scripts I've written so I can ... duh duh duh ... tunnel through DNS on my cell phone!

Holla!

LOL!!! This could help if your Linux box is a multimedia server and you want to set it to record TV shows... Saves the money Sprint PCS will be charging when they set it up w/ your cable provider...

if your phone can run java apps, then it should be able to. What model of phone is it? Does it have a web browser?

It's for windows obviously.. but I don't see any reason why someone couldn't cook up a linux version based on the vnc protocol that'd run over bluetooth
