I have found that the best method for me is to set the gnome system to use the ESD sound system.

gstreamer-properties

And choose the ESD sound system and click save. Your mileage may vary.

I too have sound problems. Can you expound on your solution? I'm not quite certain what to do. I require a little more handholding then most folks. Thanks. :?
