View Full Version : WoW, Wine and Woes

My attempt to get WoW to work with Wine on my Dapper installation has gone anything but smoothly. Originally, I tried the following guide that used Wine 0.9.6: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=120615

This was wrought with problems, but I eventually got it to work without crashing at startup, with sound working properly, and with a framerate of about 9-10 fps, although I couldn't interact with anything in-game other than my visible interface.

That was the most progress I've made so far. A few times, people suggested I try 0.9.25, and I've seen more than one success story that had it running out of the box. So, I tried 0.9.25 and got some good results, but this continually crashed every time I logged into the world. The WoW-dedicated Wine page lists 0.9.24 with an NVIDIA patch as the most stable release so far, so I tried that. This gave me the worst results yet, with WoW crashing the moment it starts up.

I have done the DisabledExtentions trick in the registry, re-installed my video drivers, and scoured the forums and Wine WoW page for information, but there doesn't seem to be much. Mostly just success stories or small problems, so I wonder what I'm doing wrong.

I've done about as much research as I can on these problems, so now I'm turning to some human beings. Each time I uninstall wine I use 'sudo make uninstall', then install the new version with './configure', 'make depend && make', and 'make install'. I'm not sure if there are artifacts being left over from previous installations and if this is affecting my attempts. I'm also unaware of any problems WoW/Wine might have with certain Addons, but I do have plenty of them.

I'm currently running Dapper on a laptop with built-in ATI Radeon Mobility X1600. I'm using fglrx version 8.29.6 running WoW on opengl graphics. Config.wtf has most of the quality levels turned up to full, but I have turned off the glow effect, the death effect, trilineral filtering, and all pixel shaders.

I'm relatively new to linux, so the more detailed you can be in any explaination you give, the better.

I recomend getting a pristine deb of Wine 0.9.25 from the official Ubuntu Wine repositories.

See here: http://www.winehq.com/site/download-deb

This worked almost out of the box for me. Just needed to add these lines in config.wtf:
SET SoundOutputSystem "1"
SET SoundBufferSize "100"
SET gxApi "OpenGL"
The thing is, that different from you, I am using a Nvidia video card

There is no diffirence in setup if he already got the graficcard running with 3d rendering, the installation for WoW and Wine doesn't change but he has to turnoff death and glow effects inside WoW but that takes about 2sec and Gloweffects you should turn of anyway so you don't get the blur effect for ex. in ZG by the spiders ;P

Glow and Death effects are off for me.

I have recently tried installing Wine 0.9.25 from Synaptic. WoW crashes at startup, just as with the compiled version of 0.9.25. I've searched around and can't find a definitive answer to the problem since most people report 0.9.25 as being fine with WoW out of the box.

The following is my Config.wtf:

Edit: Also, in 0.9.25, I've gotten no sound on 1, 2, 4, and 6 values for SoundOutputSystem.

Edit: I recently tried a couple of things and found out some interesting but still unsuccessful results. First, I deleted all my addons (except the Blizzard ones) which, instead of crashing my X server on logging into the world, simply crashed the WoW program and gave me the normal "I crashed" debug screen I've seen in Windows. After that, I deleted the World of Warcraft directory and did a fresh install. This gave me the same result: Crashing the WoW program upon logging into the world.

You're saying that you can launch the game and log in, but when you choose a character and press the key to enter the world it crashes?

Yeah, Sammi, that's what I think he is saying.

First: Blizzard is tinkering with the servers, logins, etc. the past day or so-they are beginning to preload the expansion. That's going to break some stuff.

Next: Did you try setting SET gxApi "opengl" to "D3D"?

No idea about sound. Will look into it.

Could you please post that debug msg?

On crashes. To clarify, I can load WoW.exe with no problems. After logging into the server and selecting a character, I then press "Enter World." After everything finished loading, WoW crashes and I get a debug error. This is different from the old WoW install (installed under 0.9.6) which crashed my X server. (I was able to SSH in and restart X.) Now I just get a debug error where WoW seems to be trying to access null memory.

On sound. With the clean install, sound surprisingly works fine even though it's using the same Config.wtf file. Right now, my priority is getting WoW to work with no AddOns, then with AddOns, and then with AddOns and sound.

The text of the debug report follows:

Updated: I tried running with SET gxApi "D3D". Instead of giving me a debug error, this crashed my X server upon loading the world.

[justin whitaker:First: Blizzard is tinkering with the servers, logins, etc. the past day or so-they are beginning to preload the expansion. That's going to break some stuff.]

I don't expect that to be breaking too much, but I could be wrong. I am running the expansion beta under wine now having installed it the same as I did my live install. I only needed a work around for the updater (per the postings on the winhq Burning Crusade page) for it to play fine. One note, the expansion does seem to require the -opengl (ran from terminal as wow.exe -opengl) to not have seriously messed up graphics under wine, so be prepared for that. I haven't checked sound in BC because I use teamspeak which breaks game sound anyway. :)

As to the original poster:

I installed WoW using the how to in this post:
http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=243336
which looks to be a different thread than the one mentioned in your first post, maybe it would have an idea or two to add to what you have already tried?

I am using wine 0.9.21 in Dapper with all suggested updates, nvidia graphics though so I'm no help with an ATI card, sorry.
