As the title is saying, I'm wondering what's the best for gaming :)
I'm using Gnome now and I don't have any problems, except that it feels sluggish sometimes (menu loading slow when using first time).

XFCE is pretty lightweight compared to Beryl, which I use, and makes a big difference in games.
I dont know if the difference between Gnome and XFCE or Fluxbox or any of the lightweight packages available would be noticeable, but it isn't difficult to just search for them in synaptic and try them out.

Explorer.exe?

Just kidding.

Actually, IceWM, Windowmaker, or and of the *box (openbox, fluxbox, black box) are lighter than Gnome or Xfce, noticeably so.

Hmm, okay so those are lighter.

Does anyone have experience with trying multiple desktop managers ? (or whatever they are called)

I'm kinda afraid I'll mess up my system when switching :<

from what i have tried, fluxbox is fast, however it doesn't not let you use your mouse in FPSes like Quake, I suggest FVWM crystal

When I migrated to Linux, that's what I was always afraid of. Now I just do it and worry about problems when and if they occur.

The good thing about Linux is if you run into problems, most things are fully reversible anyway.

You could always run your game without any window manager.

In response to the mouse issues in fluxbox.. I've used fluxbox with dozens of games including quake and had no issues.
