the tab control that switches between speed/peers/files etc. is done vertically, and while i can see why you might want to further differentiate deluge from utorrent, and it does look kinda cool and quirky, it really doesnt help it in the "being a useful program" stakes
for one, you cant write things on the tabs, so you have to quess what the icon represents. the other reason is that i often want to resize the bottom pane to be very big or very small, and that either means half the tabs fall off the bottom, or there is a big block of wasted space.
so, i think you should just make like uTorrent and tab horizontally :)

This has also been suggested to make the application more gnome-ish. While I hate conforming to a particular DE or OS, this change probably will be implemented anyways.

well, i don't use gnome and i really like deluge because it's a great working client AND it is desktop independant, but i also think the gnome HIG is really nice. maybe it's because most of this stuff written there is the same i learned in software ergonomics but i think the most important part is that i just thought the same way how a program should look before that ;)
and so i don't think it's a bad thing for apps to look "gnomish", because following the gnome HIG is a good thing _imho_.
