I went and downloaded the 6.10 version of ubuntu. I never used linux before. When I opened the .RAR file I don't know where to click next! So, I extracted it to a folder and...

A whole bunch of folders.

I have start, .disk, bin, casper, and no installation or iso.

first, open up Terminal (applications --> accessories --> Terminal) can you find it in sudo apt-get install x

insert x for your file name (aka firefox)
if that doesnt work

well, try that first

Just follow the instructions from the link that I've included above and you can also use CDBurnXP to burn it. It's free and you can download it for your XP here...

Ok, here is the question. Do you have to get version 6.06 before you get 6.10? If not, where in the .rar is the .iso file?

You can install Edgy, 6.10, directly so no need to install Dapper, 6.04, first. You have to download the ISO file, not the rar file and please do not unpack it. Just burn that ISO image directly with your burner and burn it as an image file, NOT a data file or you won't be able to boot. Again, if you want to follow every step from that guide, then download and install CDBurnXP first...

PLEASE, DO NOT unpack the ISO that you have downloaded! Instead, fire up a burner app and burn the ISO as an image file. I am not sure how many times I have to repeat not to unpack it first before you burn it. Otherwise, the CD won't boot and you will be mad that you have just wasted a CD...

Arite man, I had the exact problem you have right now, when I was downloading my first ubuntu cd.

what you need to do is uninstall winrar, so that files that end in .iso do not get associated with rar compression. (there are many free alternatives to winrar anyway, that you can install later on, such as extractnow)

then download he ubuntu iso image file, and if you see that it is not in rar format anymore, then you may proceed with burning it, using this link: http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/iso

If this worked, let us know.

I don't think you need to uninstall WinRAR(least I didn't have to)...all the iso's that I download look like a WinRAR file, just because the file association for iso is rar...it's actually an iso, but it appears to be a rar file(guess I repeated myself enough here). I've had no problem burning the rar(iso) file directly "as an image" to cd.

Make sure that you do as has been suggested, burn the file "as an image", not as a data file or a bootable file...burn at a low speed (8x or less).

And now it wont go to the CD cuz the winRAR takes 2.4 mb!then, like i've said, just uninstall winrar, it sucks anyway. plus, its not free, after a while, u have to pay for winrar, if u didn't already know. but seriously, that guide that i gave you, the psychocats one, is an awesome guide. use it to ur best advantage, and ubuntu will be installed on your system.

Trust me! this worked for me. you could also try to find some preference in winRAR, to not associate winRAR with iso files anymore, but the easiest way is to just uninstall winRAR.

u can PM me (private message) about specifics if you want.
