I got roped into Linux right after Warty was released, and since then I've tried alot of distros. I've always avoided Fedora though because of a bad Red Hat experience way back in the day. I finally broke down and installed Fedora Core 6 today though, and I'm blown away. It's like Edgy, only stable and fully functional. It boots a little slower, and I had to jump through a hoop or two to get my wireless driver (I understand why this is), but everything else Just Works. The desktop is the most responsive Gnome I've ever used outside of Arch Linux, all the software I need is in the main repositories, and all the adjustments I've needed to make have been very straightforward and simple. Even the package manager has been great, which is a huge surprise considering the other RPM distro I've tried was the OpenSUSE. I've heard alot of negativitiy toward Fedora lately, but for my purposes it is the best distro around. Highly reccomended.

Tried it a week ago or something. Can't say I agree with you. Gui for package management was terrible in my eyes. But that is good beeing a linux user. You can make up your own mind and use your own favorite.
Maybe for me it was the artwork that got my attention. It's really nice. But I can't understand why they have made nautilus open in a new window. (that is just plain idiotic) Found fedora frog (similar to automatix) but it has a good way to go to keep up with automatix 2. And why not make install/live cd when you have the tech for it. Much more user/noob frendly.

That's the default Nautilus behavior, so not really Fedora's doing. Alot of people prefer it that way. I'm with you though. I get tired of closing all those windows. :) It's adjustable though.
I hadn't heard of Fedora frog, and I never used automatix either so I can't really compare. Automatix is pretty awesome though, and I've read blog posts from Fedora developers pointing out that they have no interest in making non-free software easier to install, so I wouldn't doubt that its easier with Ubuntu. I just don't use much of it, myself.
You're totally right on the live CD thing too. It is great to be able to try things before you install so you know what to expect. Maybe they'll do that down the line.

if you need extra repositories, install either the livna-release rpm or the rpmforge-release rpm (but NOT both as they are very slightly incompatible. they won't cause any problems if you just have livna as the main 3rd party repo and just install about 5 or so packages from rpmforge).

I'll have to chek out this fedora frog thing, although livna works very well. I'm using the x86_64 version of FC6 as sort of a test, and Edgy as my primary OS. I might have to start booting into it more often as I'm still having several small issues with Edgy. :-?

livna rather than rpmforge is the one thats 'recommended' by the fedora team. just so that you know. i never bothered with fedora frog as i never saw the need.

Yeah, I found linva when I was looking for the madwifi driver. Between that and the standard repos, I've got all the software I need. I hear that Fedora has fewer packages, but luckily none of the ones I need are missing.

effectively, it hasn't got that many less. if you just compare the numbers, it appears that ubuntu has loads more (ie ubuntu has around 19,000 whilst fedora cora + extra + livna has around 8,000-9,000). but when you have a look at the composition of packages that ubuntu is made up of, those extra packages are just old unmaintained gtk1 packages and packages that have been split into 2 or 3 seperate packages (eg libmpeg has been split into libmpeg0 and libmpeg1 etc). you will find that installing an keeping track of the installed packages is much 'cleaner' in fedora. many of those split packages in ubuntu tend to cause lots of dependency headaches, but fedora doesn't tend to have that problem.

I installed Fedora 6 on another machine this last weekend, in fact, and I was also pretty impressed. Fedora's repositories aren't as comprehensive as Ubuntu's are, in my 1 1/2-day experience with it, but I do like how Compiz is the default window manager. Yum is pretty easy to use, too, although it'd be hard pressed to beat Aptitude. All in all, I'd say it makes a not-too-far-off second to Ubuntu. :)

I'm currently dual-booting FC6 and WinXP Pro, I would like to use Edgy but the tty doesn't like my caps key which really annoys me (the tty font is also odd) and I can't get the nvidia drivers working without a huge headache; its a torrent of small issues that put me off.
Installing the nvidia drivers in FC6 was pretty easy, codecs installed fine and it is nice responsive desktop. I like the way livna packages kernel modules like ntfs and nvidia with kmod-*-kernel-2.6.*.FC-****, makes it easier to keep track.
