Pretty funny... I did think the MAC guy was kind of arrogant and petulant.

Is it any wonder that a "news story" on Apple ads turning off people is on MSNBC?
Still, the story does have a point. I've never been a fan of negative advertising (political smear campaigns always make me like the other candidate--the one being smeared). That's one thing Microsoft definitely has up on Apple. The recent Windows XP ads are all about XP (granted, they don't say much) and don't mention anything about Apple.
It's stupid schoolboy behavior to have ads based on an "I'm great and you suck" attitude. I remember there was a thread on here some time ago about creating some kind of Ubuntu ad, and the general consensus was to not bash Windows in it (I don't know if that ad ever came to fruition), and that was a good idea.
Play up your strong points. No need to belittle others or make fun of them.
Edit: Found the thread... Ubuntu commercial (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=41771)

I think free software needs good marketing. Rather than this undercurrent of rebellion that seems to be commonplace but not to much widespread avail.

Interestingly enough the Russian advertising laws state that you cannot bash another product be it fairly or unfairly. It is allowed to do it anonimously however such as "we are better than the leading brand" but highly discouraged.
I always hated Apple's marketing strategy (their products suck too but that's beside the point) because they always seem to sell you a lifestyle rather than a product and that irks me. I get a computer to do work on it, not as an accessory to my shiny new car.
I think what hurt Apple the most is that they use their products in Pimp My Ride. I love that show for how retarded they are with the pimping but would definetly steer clear of anything they do :)

slightly off topic...
How did you guys view that article? I assume you're using Ubuntu?
It kicks me out and (basically) says I need at least flash 8. As far as I can tell only flash 7 is available for linux.
Being stuck on flash 7 is by far my biggest problem with linux :(

can't see the link, page complains about flash version (I have 7, it wants at least 8, and I don't like using proprietary beta stuff). any local links to it without a version checker?
I hate the needless use of flash everywhere, including youtube etc.

YouTube and Google Videos are probably the only truly excellent use of Flash ever IMO. Remove video codec and compatibility issues across the board. You got flash? You can watch videos. I think it's great. Hell, flash based videos are just about the only videos I can watch on my ubuntu box, Totem fails miserably on everything else.

I was in Windows at the time but the Flash 9 beta for Linux works very well, the only issue I encountered so far is that after watching alot of flash movies on Youtube the browser freezes. That doesn't show up till after about 15-20 videos so I don't think it's much of an issue ;)

Incorrect. Flash Player 9 is now on Linux. I'm using it just fine.

I'm on a Mac with Firefox2, worked fine for me. I have Flip4Mac installed though.
I thought those Apple commercials were really good. My parents even liked them. Although good advertising doesn't always equal good sales. Remember that "Dude, your getting a dell" guy from a few years ago. Didn't do much for sales. I think he got busted for Marijuana not long after also :)
