Sticky Threads...Is there a better way?

Ok, so I am at a loss for a better suggestion myself, but are there alternatives that have ever been considered to sticky threads? Personally I find them just a little irritating since they always appear, rather than appearing by default until a user has viewed them, then just by selection. And with all that, I don't know that even as sticky threads they get the attention they obviously need (as in the reason they are sticky). Not a criticism, just wondered if there is a better way.
