Found this on Youtube today. Very interesting and inspiring watch, it seems almost Steve Jobs -esque :)

DAMN that's good hype.

Yeah, this is a commercial that has been airing in the states for quite a while now. I think its very cool. Goes along with the Ubuntu commercial idea. Don't attack Windows or Mac, just play to your own strengths.

It's a nice commercial. But why doesn't IBM certify their pc's for Ubuntu ? see :

EDIT:
Wow, IBM has really struck home with their flash bling on Linux!

Yeah if you navigate through that flash show to the "Visionary" tab, you can see some for commercials like the one noted above.

Especially the one with Muhammed Ali about "Shake things up".

"Don't call me no Underdog!!!!!!!"

Sorry if this is a double post or something, but I loved this commercial and wanted to share it with you guys.

Via YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ZmJ63sHoKU)

"Does he have a name?"

"His name... is Linux."

love it!

Wasn't IBM the company that used to ship out their pc's with that MS-DOS software made by a guy called B. Gates?

I like it as well but I think the boy is reaching his puberty nowadays ready to be let out to leave the lab.

Concerning IBM, the situation was way too different at that time, I wouldn't hold that against them.

Of all the skills in all the world the GNU/Linux community is useless at creating adverts.

Come on guys! any of you who have artisitic skills I challange you to come up with an Ubuntu advert that gets in touch with the common person.

That is a pretty wicked advert, I'd definately pay attention to that if it was put on the telly.

It has been on TV years ago I believe, its been around for a while. Still cool :-D

Didn't quite work for me, but maybe it was just because it was small. I liked the end though, especially "the future is open" - it's something we should all remember.

We should really get some ubuntu adverts going - maybe we should make some decent banners for people's websites - there must be quite a few people with websites of the forums.

TV ads would be really cool, but they would probably be too expensive for Ubuntu (unless canonical are in a good mood)

Can't watch it right now (listening to election coverage). Is this the one they aired during one of the superbowls?

That commercial is about 3 years old. Link to download (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=8333280591924223277&q=ibm+linux) [Google]. Link to Spanish (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=15634280078951609&q=ibm+linux) (subtitles) version.

I don't think it would be too hard to make an Ubuntu "tv" ad. The trick would be to get enough people together physically. Or we could make the ad in such a way that it would be easy to produce with online collaboration. We could then pass it by canonical. From there canonical could use it and/or internet distribution. I know there has been a few threads floating around that are about this subject. There has to be some people experienced in this field, we just have to sift through the "What is your career?" thread. lol

Yea I recon there are advertising execs, designers, animators, sound engeneers all itching to contribute to GNU/Linux and don't know how.

I can do logos! Oh wait we have those...

Was that Ali towards the end?

i saw this commercial a couple years ago, it was defenitly one of those commercials that draw you in and make you want to see the end, very effective.

i love it :D

and it also makes perfect sense. All those people are masters at whatever they do, contributing their skills and knowlege to the boy (which symbolizes linux), and "whatever we know, he knows. Whatever he knows, we all benefit from". Very deep when you think about it.

Was that Ali towards the end?
Yeah, that was Ali. Penny Marshall was the one who said "Timing is everything." I don't know any of the others.

Great commercial, by the way.

right on polygon. i saw this commercial a year or two ago and didnt pay much attention. watched it again and realized how symbolic it was.
nobody mentioned the famous coach wooden of ucla?(old guy talking about teamwork, for those not american or basketball fans, he won a TON of college titles and is probably one of the most famous coaches in NCAA basketball history).
who was the older guy talking about business? It never shows his face, but his voice is very familiar from tv.

....?

Didn't you get the memo? IBM is one of the biggest backers behind Linux, it's increasingly a cornerstone of their business. They've been building Linux/Unix into their company's strategy for many years now.

yea, search youtube for "linux commericial".... they have some pretty cool ad's that they've run on TV before, and from a few years ago.

I actually know someone that works for IBM... they've got several hundred developers working on linux full time.

sorry i missed that.. not really that 'into' IT.

Do they back a certain distribution to run on their servers? or have their own custom?
