I don't understand that everybody sarcastically says they miss Windows' spyware and viruses.

Even though I prefer Linux, you have to be a pretty big technical moron to get a virus in Windows. I've used the same XP install for about 2 years now, and have never gotten any virus or spyware and it's still running smooth and fast.

The thing I mist most in Linux is Photoshop.

I've used xp since it's release. It's by far the best M$ os ever. It was a massive improvement over 98. That having been said. I've lost count of all the viruses I had over the years. By the way malware is a virus as far as I'm concerned! All of this is academic xp is the past Vista is the future.Vista is big steaming turd. It offers no improvement to xp all it's slow the animated this that and the other thing are nice the first hour but then start it get on your nerves. It seams M$ spent most of it's time making sure my videos don't play on their OS. Vista is the worst mistake M$ has made since BOB. I Imagen thats why they've finely started suing Linux distros.

I've just noticed that Adobe Shockwave Player is not available for any Linux platform. I searched the net and found some comments about this I entirely agree with so I thought to share it with you.

They aren't going to make Shockwave for Linux, better to just use Crossover Office and install Shockwave that way.
I don't understand that everybody sarcastically says they miss Windows' spyware and viruses.
It's possible you have the Storm Worm. Anti-Viruses don't and can't scan for this worm, and have infected some estimated 50 million computers and it continues to grow.

Storm Worm runs on 98-Vista and has been confirmed to work on Vienna.

I dual boot so I have what I need no matter the circumstance, but the things that I wish I could do in Linux to save the reboot time are:

Games
Web Cam in chat
Internet browsing that works for all the sites I need. Namely Blackboard for college courses, and some imbeded video.
Photoshop

I would have included Visual Studio for programming but I have since gotten Code::Blocks working quite well and am satisfied with it.

But it isn't a real worry, as I don't mind using Windows though I am enjoying Ubuntu very much.

ChessBase, a chess database program. Scid is really good, and available through the package manager. It's good enough, but not as user friendly and flexible as ChessBase.

I've used Windows since I was a baby! I switched over about a year ago. There's only 3 things I miss:

- Being able to scream at and/or beat the living $#@% out of my computer for freezing up and/or crashing and rebooting itself.
- Video editing programs! Cinelerra just won't cut it :\
- Rainbow Six 3! It won't work, even using Cedega.

Other than that, for me, everything on a Linux is at LEAST 20x better than the Windows "substitute."

i miss elite dvd ripping software. the stuff that gets updated as soon as an unrippable dvd appears with 100 IFOs, ARCos, unreferenced titlesets, etc. i had ripit4me running under wine once, but the page every single site refers to has been taken down. i realize ripit4me is no longer under development, however, i haven't seen anything it can't do.

I know, there's Flightgear and X-Plane (perhaps), but there's way more development of cool stuff around MSFS. Some aircrafts built for FSX are the very best around. But I'm sure that, given a little time, creative minds will realize that there's more potential from Linux.
That's it. The rest is better, except a way to preserve anonymity. We are entering times where, unfortunately, this will be an absolute necessity.
Now that's it.

I miss ACDSee. I need to open tons of zipped image files day in and day out. Since I can't get any program that can do it in linux (I also need the file tree, so Comix is out) I have to constantly reboot to windows to use ACDSee.

Weird part is I had Gwenview or Showimg doing it for a few days and then they just stopped.

This may not be exactly relevant but can't help posting:
1) I miss the 'zonealarm' and 'antivirus' which used to keep running always and hog the resources

2) The frequent antivirus/malware/spyware ... scans and updates

3) I also miss the searching on google for antivirus , security ... issues , reviews etc.

4) miss the regular registry cleaning, defragmenting , scanning ...

Overall, I miss my paranoia for my safety when using windows.

I missed some of that too when I was moving over to Linux lol. Though now that I look back, most of the maintenance I did was overkill. All that's really required for me (on Vista) is Windows Firewall, Avast antivirus, and CCleaner.

the first three i can get over and find replacements for eventually. though i really love foobar. but the CAD software is a necessity and i have found nothing similar in linux.

1. Some hardware drivers.

Namely for the winmodems that come with the crappy computers I tend to buy and the crappy DSL modems that Portuguese ISPs tend to "offer" for their services...

In my first Linux days, I jousted a Lexmark printer, back in the days them cheaters still displayed a penguin in the boxes their printers came in...
Then I used an Epson and now an HP - those are two brands that effectively support Linux, printers-wise at least... :)

2. Some tool that #$%$#%"/% finally enables me to write multi-session CDs and DVDs!!!
I'm sure there is some and I'll make a post about it soon.
BTW I mean burners that actually support RockRidge extensions or some other sort of long filenames... beyond the first session...
That is actually how I ended up in this thread... :P

K. Edited this to add a link to the post I mentioned I'd do and in the meantime did... Here it is:

3. Some software compatible with SPSS (files).

Don't get me wrong I am a linux fan, but

I am sick and tired of having 15 videoplayers. Why can't we not have one (1) do-it-all video player? VLC is the closest I have come.

It is always hit and miss when you want to play a media file.

And secondly I miss better hardware support. I have ATI video card and driver issues is a constantly a headache.

I realize that there may be good legitimate reasons for all of the above, but when comparing to a smooth running XP, it makes ubuntu linux look pale and behind...

foobar2000. Sure, I can run it using Wine, but it's not the same.
I've used almost every audio player I can find for Linux, but none of them match foobar2000.

It's always seemed strange to me that for all of these years no one has made a serious and dedicated effort to clone foobar.

I really miss Winamp, XMMS is good, but relatively boring.

Photoshop

and BSOD : )

Actually, I've been studying for my A+ / N + cert and I'm gaining a little more respect for Windows again as I'm learning some fundamental things I didn't understand before.

But once I get my Linux + I'm sure I'll loose it, hehe.

Streets & Trips / other GPS map routing software.

I can't say i miss it cause i have XP on my laptop becasue there is not decent alternative for linux.
To me this is the weakest software category for linux (though people are trying). I would get a proprietary map program if there was one offered for linux.

The other thing i have to say is that flash support on any browser for linux SUCKS. it's so bad its almost unusable. This i do not understand. It is terrible terrible terrible terrible terrible! So much of the net suses flash now there is no way to avoid this headache.

I do not understand how can someone (above post) miss vis studio?
You miss MFC??
I have to say that is one thing that has got to be the biggest reason for moving away from that OS.

As far as Games are concerned, I would like to point out that Linux can't help much (except develop projects like 'wine') :-k, because the platform on which a game can run is mainly chosen by the game-developer and they mainly opt for windoze cause of its widespread usage.
As more and more people start using linux based systems, you will see the trend start to shift. :D

Every OS has its strong and weak points, and thankfully I find the former more in Ubuntu :)

Depends. KDE can show thumbs of photos in the dialogues, including a comparison in overwrite prompts (in the event of a same-name copy/move, so you can visually see the photo you're copying/moving vs the photo you would overwrite).

Also linux has a build in firewall, iptables, but it very basic packet filtering. And, in theory, because of the open source model security holes can be fixed really fast.

The way it comes out of the Ubuntu box (CD) iptables is good enough for me.

About an hour ago I did a port scan at http://nmap-online.com/

Scan Result

Nmap Options: -p1-5000 -T4 -sS 201.213.14.65

Starting Nmap 4.11 ( http://www.insecure.org/nmap ) at 2007-11-14 19:51 Central Europe Standard Time
All 5000 scanned ports on 201-213-14-65.net.prima.net.ar (201.213.14.65) are filtered

Nmap finished: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 1271.281 seconds

Now that is a result I do NOT miss from windows.

I still love this topic although it does get repetitive, but I find that my answers are constantly changing as open source programs slingshot ahead of most competitors. But the one thing that I miss dearly is Winamp. I do use XMMS, but it lacks severely. AmaroK is lovely, but still not as perfect as Winamp. The jump and queue commands were among the most intuitive software functions I've ever come across, and the interface is perfect through and through.

Mine is an odd one.

Steve Gibson, over at GRC, writes all kinds of neat little (assembler) routines, and because he's writing things to help the largest number of people possible, he writes for Windows.

That, believe it or not, was the toughest part of abandoning Windows. I like to take part in the group beta testing that goes on in the GRC newsgroups, but the code is Windows code.

I do the best I can with virtual machines. :)

Having to restart after every update, and then if I didn't want to do so, being nagged every few minutes until I just couldn't take it any more and relented.

Waiting a good 10 minutes or so for Adobe Acrobat Reader to actually load a PDF.*

Having enough time waiting for the computer to boot into a usable state to make myself a cup of tea and read the newspaper.

Having the wireless network break every few minutes or so (actually, the WLAN was fine, it was windows at fault) so that the only way I could fix it was to hit "repair" then cancel it before it tried to re-connect automatically, and only then to try and manually connect to the network.

*I know there are alternatives, but on, say, the school network, I have no choice.

In all seriousness, the only thing I would miss would be games, but for the fact that I never played them on WIndows...

Right now I'm missing easy installability of software. Not all packages are available for Synaptic.

i.e I'm wanting to install Alien Arena. I have it on my desktop in a .ZIP file.

On Windows I could simply double-click it and my ZIP Utility could recognize the setup program and unzip and install. or it was an executable ZIP.

That's my .02 on this subject for right now. I've only been running and learning about Ubuntu the last 5 days as of this post. I have most codecs installed for my multimedia I think, I've got my DVDs and Audios playing, my desktop tweaked and it's like building your own OS from a base platform. Right up my alley! Drivers mostly.
My laptop for instance is running hot in linux, but not in vista. I don't really know where the issue is.
And a good sensible audio system. Everything seems to be.. well, a bit odd, and sound very often doesn't work like you'd expect. Stuttering FMOD, snes emulator with choppy sound on a modern computer (with ati drivers, so it's not that)..

Only things i miss..

Ease of game installation (only thing thats easy to install on Windoze), and usualy less bugs when playing them.. Wine does a decent job, but nothing compared to games on Windoze.. (kills me to say Windoze is actually good for anything..)

And.. Winamp.. sorry, but truth be told, nothing I've tried even starts to compares to it

Other then that, Winblows.

Hi, I am not sure whether this has already been answered, I have read up to about page 20, cant be arsed checking all the way through yet as I have just got to mention this.
************************************************** ********************************************
Lots of people keep saying they miss uTorrent. uTorrent works brilliantly in Ubuntu (I am running 7.10) through wine. I use it all the time.
************************************************** *********************************************
I have been windowless for about 3 months now and apart from the odd REALLY frustrating time, like laptop battery dying during a synaptic update/upgrade and I had to reinstall after lots of trying not to have to. Then on reinstall, I went through the procedure to get sound (the same as I did during the first install - I had no sound) working (I keep an "ubuntu diary" file of things I did to get things working and of useful commands - and its been invaluable) but I still had no sound, so after cosmic amounts of googling and trying of different things I figured from pasting bits of different posts together I just had to swap the sound module thing from the 386 kernel image into the generic kernel image and everything is hunky dory, for now anyway!

What I miss.
- Not having to check online if and how well some new game works before I buy it.
- Not being able to complain like hell and demanding my money back when some feature/program doesnt work like it said it would.
- Upgrading my HDD all the time due to M$ extensive hammering of the drives leading to very poor quality life (about 2 yrs, Win98 batters them, Vista even more so). (Although this is very presumptious. I can only go on what I have been told of how linux doesnt wear out the HDD as much as window$)
- Not being able to give up if something doesnt work after the patch.
- Not being able to manipulate my own files directly, but wrecking them indirectly (and quite unintentionally)
- Not having to pay for software if I cant get a pirated serial or patch for.
- Taking twice as long to do anything by having to constantly point and click, point and click, point and click etc.
- BSOD
- Useless cli
- rebooting evertime I want to do some admin stuff, then rebooting afterwards, just to find out I have to reboot again to correct something .

Oh wait thats what I dont miss (Except for the first one!)
But seriously, the only important one is the drivers thing and Nokia PC Suite (which I know there are apps similar, but in window$ I used to just be able to plug in the work phone to my laptop, click on use mobile as modem (or some such thing) and I have (almost) instant (but SLOW) internet connection. I just cant get the phone working as a modem in ubuntu without it asking for login details that I dont have (pc suite never asked for these, just connected me!).

I often miss Windows' pretty damned decent IME which lets me type Japanese, Korean, etc. in pretty much any application; SCIM only works for me in certain applications and I can't get it to work in Firefox and Open Office for the life of me; I hope this works better in Hardy. :/

Oops, I almost forgot Foobar 2k, hands-down the best music player in my opinion.

Not much really. I like the simplistic app feel in Linux as opposed to Windows where the big guys cost lots of $$ and come with never-will-be used features.

Why pay for Office 2007 when OpenOffice will suffice? How fancy do you need to get with digital paper?!

I guess I've been poisoned from the long term use of windows. Every once and a while I think to myself (is it a good choice to cut cold from windows?) but I'm still getting my feet wet, and I can always use Virtual machine.

As for gaming, I don't have much time for those likes now a days. I find a quest for knowledge a lot more fulfilling.

I miss gaming most of all, then comes Nero.

You can get Nero for linux. I used the older beta version and it worked fine. The newer, GTK2 version, requires a new license key, so I haven't tried it. I've read that it too works fine. However, the open source tools work fine for me, so I haven't bothered with Nero in quite a while. But if you need dual layer DVD support, I could see someone using it.

run dialog seems to work for that, if you want something easier than that, then keep a terminal open and type "mozilla-firefox http://www.google.com &" there's probably a way to make the terminal do that automaticaly with just http.// but I don't know about that...

Software, unless it requires 3d graphics you can run ANY windows software in virtual box, I do that all the time and thus I have no issues, if I ever need MSOffice or photoshop or one of those silly bloated IDEs I just use my virtual machine, since it is isolated from the WEB the virtual machine is faster than the dual booted XP anyways...

If the software requires 3d acceleration then it is either a very specialized piece of software (unlikely) or it is a game, you can just quit PC games... but if that doesn't work for you, there's WINE. I use WINE to run warcraft III and gta:San Andreas, after those games I don't really feel any need for any other proprietary graphics intensive game.

Well I'm not missing anything because I dual boot (decided against a virtual machine). I hope some day everything will run in Ubuntu, but for now I still use XP for games and Photoshop. I've been playing with Gimp, but I don't know it well enough yet to always accomplish the task at hand, and let's face it for the time being we need Windows for games. I did find a program that was supposed to run Windows games flawlessly in Linux, but it required a monthly subscription fee. I just couldn't justify that. So for now I keep a small Windows partition, but I do look forward to the day when I can get rid of it.

I don't really miss any apps. At first I missed Photoshop and Paint (yeah, MS Paint. I had got real used to that lil' critter for various every-day uses). However, there's replacement apps for those, it was just a matter of getting used to new apps.

What I still miss is:
1) the ability to press print-screen and keep the image in clipboard. I could modify the gnome screenshot app but it doesn't seem worth the hassle.

2) I miss a user interface without visible redraw latency (on my slow, war-veteran laptop).

That´s what I miss too. Ubuntu´s interface is a bit slower than XP´s interface.. But that´s only the interface, the rest is better in ubuntu. I think a quick interface is a must for ¨powerusers¨

EDIT: Yeah, post #666!

I miss the peace and quiet of NOT having people ask me about PC problems!

Before I switched to Linux in 2003, I was pretty knowledgeable with PC's. Now that I am using Linux, I have Windows users always bugging me to fix their PC issues! What is up with that?

This probably sounds like a load of crap from a linux lover, but... nothing. I've been off Windows for about a year. I love learning about it, playing with it, customizing it, everything!

I love the low amount of RAM it uses, the lack of viruses, how everything is free (as in both speech and beer... haha).

I think Exaile is the best music player in the world for my taste. I've been a Firefox fan for years. Open Office does everything I need it to do. Gnome is my kind of desktop environment. Compiz Fusion and Avant Window Navigator kick the crap out of my old Vista install. I LOVE the terminal... and I'm still a newbie for the most part!

The only complaint I have is that every once in a while I come across a problem... but then I just get on the forums and get my fix for it within hours! And besides, I ran into problems with Windows all the time.

I've yet to find a program that I wanted and couldn't find an open source project that does it as well or better. Yep... I'm sold... and it's only been a year.

I guess this is a novell way of askng the old.. but.. here is the
question.. what are the applications that you miss from Windows??
And Why..
Me::

1) MusicMatch Jukebox..Great Player.. Lets you queue files, convert them, play mp3pro,etc(of course these can be done in Linux but with some modding)

2)Nero::The best DVD/CD writing app I've seen , but sadly
is not OSS or freeware..

3) Norton Partition Magic..One great feature is that it allows you
to convert existing drives to another file system..

EDIT
4) Photoshop:: The BEST photoediting software..

Edit again::
5) Yahoo Messenger:
This one esp. for my mother who chats with
some of her frens and rel. overseas on Webcam, and Gyachi
is quite quite good, but still not as good as the Yahoo counterpart,
and I feel like spitting on Y! for not bringin out a good one for Linux
yet..

The only way I think we'd get all the above on Linux.. is
when there are too many users on Linux.. and there are
very few takers on Windows.. I am eagerly waiting for that day..
May God bless Linux

1. Amarok, I like it a lot better than anything I've used in windows
2. K3B, yeah nero is better still but K3B is awesome
3. Gparted, i dont think it can convert filesystems, but that seems kinda pointless tbh
4. Gimp is more than enough for average users, although you can run CS2 in wine
5. Gyachi, I've never used it, but it has webcam, voice chat, all that good stuff

I'm no music fan... so I don't miss software like Itunes, JUkebox, etc.

GAMES!

I appreciate all the hard work volunteers put forth to make free games, but gaming on linux is WAY BEHIND Windows. There are maybe 2 or 3 linux games with decent graphics but theyre FPS (not everyone wants to play fps), the rest look like something designed for a 486. And getting Windows games to run under wine is troublesome to say the least.

When Linux gets decent games I'll make the switch over, until then I'm forced to dual boot.

I miss the games.
What I don't miss though;
The freezing, instability, virus' (even though I personally know how to avoid 99.9% of them). Installations that get slower and slower until you're forced to re-install. License fees corporate greed in the design of the software and formats etc.

Overall I've converted and won't be going back, I have windows on a laptop and it often reminds about what I like about Linux and don't like about windows.

The basics such as office software, web browsers and so on are available in formats which are equal to if not better than any windows only based software, but even aside from the fact that there is no high quality CAD package available for Linux it is all the little things like language software, driving test software etc. that I still use windows for.

I guess this is a novell way of askng the old.. but.. here is the

And Why..

I miss nothing from Windows (wow, Window-centric, even on the Ubuntu forums! ;-) )

But I do miss the following from OS X:

1. Omniweb (Firefox is nice, but I love Omniweb)
2. Apple's Mail.app, and its integration with the address book--I miss the integrated address book. I haven't figured out yet how to import my Mac stuff to Evolution, and am not too happy with Evo, anyway.... That's a work still in progress.
3. iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb, iBlog (not Apple, but nice). (no, I don't really miss iTunes)
4. Digital Photo Pro by Canon
5. iComic, although Buoh gives me most of them--the rest from the web

Lastly, I miss the integration with MobileMe. I can use the web for this stuff, so it's not the end, but I miss the extra security that MobileMe gives me for backup.

So, for now, I still archive my email on my Mac, and do all my digital photography there as well. Everything else is Ubuntu. Actually, since the Wind has a tiny-ish screen, photography would be awkward even if I didn't want to use the Mac-only software.

OK, I love Linux, and there are many things I do NOT miss, but here are a few of the things I do:

1) WinEdt (I'm sorry, but Kile and Winefish don't really come close),
2) MikTeX's automatic package finder,
3) MatLab, Maple, and Mathematica,
4) My working DVD player,
5) Drivers for the volume buttons on the front of my Dell Inspiron,
6) Left-click file rename,
7) Hibernate mode on my Laptop (still having some errors in Ubuntu),
8) A smooth-running Google Earth,
9) Streaming media support,
10) Being constantly reamed by Bill Gates.

I was going to say iTunes, but I just found Rhythmbox the other day, and it rules! I'm sure some of these things are fixable, but I don't know how to fix them yet (yes, I've been playing around with Wine.) Overall though, Linux can have my first born child.

Consistency in the use of access keys (menu shortcut keys) for menu bars and drop down menus.

I need to use Alt-F to access the "File" drop down menu but I am prevented from using the Alt-S to then access the "Save" option in that drop down menu. (Thankfully, some applications such as Firefox and Openoffice sidestep this peculiar situation).

I miss the finesse. The Windows layout isn't brilliant, and in general I prefer the linux way of doing thing and design. But there seems to be greater finesse to hw it looks. Its difficult to describe exactly what I mean by that. It just looks more professionally done.

Microsoft Office, that's all.

MS Office 97 runs great under WINE. I have not tried my Office XP yet. With very few differences Open Office is a very good alternative. The differences are with copy and paste formatting issues when pasting web page text into Open Office as unformatted text. When I was using Windows XP and Office XP and pasting out of IE, there was very little editing needed to paste into a document that I have to use for work. I have decided that it is really not that much more to justify going back to Windows. A lot of this difference has more to do with Firefox. The same extra format editing was required using Firefox and pasting into MS Office.
