I put off upgrading IE7 on XP 'til recently (just out of boredom) even though Firefox is my fave browser both on Ubuntu and XP.
Is it just me, or is ClearType on XP shockingly awful? I have a TFT monitor, but all ClearType there does is make things look like they've been written in pencil and then bolded. It's like all they did was apply Gaussian blur. I've no idea how they believe 80% of people like it.
Now, "ClearType" on Ubuntu (I'm still on Dapper, by the way) by David Turner is seriously comfortable. There are issues with certain parts, but it's a great step up.
If Microsoft force system wide ClearType on Vista I'd log in more far less (I still need to for some apps).
Ubuntu goes forward, while Microsoft goes back...I think the long term future is optimistically clear.

I know. It's still shockingly awful.

I can't really tell which fonts are better, however I see a difference between Win and Ubuntu.
Though I have to say that Win does a better job with smaller fonts (Size 10 and smaller)

Actually, you're right...I took the time to really tweak CT in XP and it's quite nice now, definitely in the smaller fonts. Ubuntu's not far behind.
