I finally got my wife switched to Ubuntu. Now she's asking for a Zoo Tycoon game. I got Zoo Tycoon 2 and installed it via Wine but it's unplayable due to very choppy graphics and sound issues.I have never worked on getting a game working in Linux yet (other than Q3 and ET) so I don't know where to start in order to provide a fun game for my wife. Any help would be appreciated.

search for games that do work http://appdb.winehq.org/, or install cedega.

I have had no success with Wine nor Crossover Games (trial) nor VMware (enabling experimental direct3d)

I would have expected this to be quite easy to get working, its getting quite old after all!

Any further ideas/things to try id be greatful

I share your sentiment, as I would very much like to eliminate Windows on all of my home computers.
But running Windows OS games under linux doesn't strike me as something that should be universally simple. The "behind the scenes" coding required to implement many of the graphics in these games likely circumvents standard Windows OS toolboxes in lieu of more efficient, proprietary techniques.
I would expect most emulators to stumble over that type of programming.

So I'm constantly on the lookout for linux-native ports or clones of these games rather than fighting with WINE (and I certainly won't expect my wife or my 5 year old to launch VMWare just to run their old programs...)

Anybody aware of a native Linux zoo-tycoon type of game?

About a month ago, I saw this web page about this project in Linux that completely redone Zoo Tycoon with extra features. But for the life of me, I can not find that web page again. It's out, somewhere. Good luck.
